Unsure about how many steps to aim for.

Hi, I'm new to fitbit. I have the flex, and love it. However I would love some input on how many steps to aim for in a day. How many steps do any of you average on a typical day?

@JulieVMEvery world health body is trying to have their populus aim for 10,000 steps per day  plus some other exercise. This link from the CDC is the basis of Fitbits default settings.

Go and enjoy your new addiction and gradually work up to a goal. Many see how they feel at the 10000 mark. I found that life seems to get in the way and I found it easier to aim for a 45 minute walk in the morning. That gave me 5000 steps and the rest just happened.

I'm not very good with numbers but just in general it's finding a step count you're comfortable with. Maybe average your steps daily in a week and set it from there. Then maybe in a week, a month...you want to set your goal a bit higher and challenge yourself.

WHO defaults the minimum walking time to 10,000 steps. But many folks around here are getting 20k to 50k a day. I up the ante now and then on my Fitbit app to meet the Calories Burned requirement of 3600 calories at the moment.

I think a good goal is to aim for more daily steps than you did last week, and less than you will do next week.

Asking this question on a forum like this will only give you anecdotal evidence. If you are really interested in meaningful stats (especially for people comparable to you in terms of age and corpulence), you should have a look at the benchmarks under the Premium plan, as explained in this other discussion. You can get a free trial for a week, which will sufficient to get these stats.

I started at 10k and now aim for between 12-15k but if I'm in a position where I can fit more in, all the better! I usually have to do about 12k in order to hit my distance and calorie targets and get twitchy if I don't see lots of green! Smiley Happy

I think it's about starting with something challenging but achievable for you and then pushing yourself as the Fitbit addiction really takes hold and you adjust to the extra activity.

Depends on what you are trying to achieve.  A study at the University I work at showed that the largest general health benefit came from walking about 6K a day.  There is a fairly steep improvement in health when you go from 2k to 6K beyond 6K the health curve begins to flatten.  However if you are walking to lose weight going for 10K or more is a goal worth working toward.  If you have not been walking much then I'd recommend figuring out what your average has been and then increasing it gradually and build up rather than setting a number that is so high that it is difficult to attain (which would probably lead to your being frustrated at not making your goal).  I've had any number of FB "friends" who seem to have dropped out and I assume that they have either (1) lost their Fitbit, or (2) could not reach their goal so gave up.  The trick for me is to find opportunities throughout the day to get in 1K to 2K additional steps by just parking farther from when I am going or taking a break and going for a 15-20 minute walk rather than grabbing a cup of coffee.
