@jonrog1Fitbit will not be able to detect the effort because it is step based. A suggestion could be to log a Manual Activity as Hike.. Select Don't know your distance ? and then select Intensity of the 0-9lb pack.
That option gives me the same calorie burn as walking at 4.5 mph.... It leaves my steps intact and gives me Very Active Minutes....
Select Hike, not Hiking.....

What difference hasn't it made? I'm not convinced carrying 10 extra pounds will make that much of a difference in terms of calories burned.
Is running not an option? That would be the obvious way to burn more within the same amount of time. If not, have you considered nordic walking? Very popular over here (Finland), especially among older folks and people who cannot run. Will make you walk much faster and won't be (literally!) a burden like a weight vest. Will also engage your upper body.

Can anyone please explain to me how to pair my fitbit Flex with MyFitnessPal on my android? All I would really like to do to start is count calories on MyFitnessPal and see how many calories I burn each day on my fitbit. Also , just for the fun of it I like to see how many steps I do and how many active minutes.
My calorie count is supposed to be 1200 per day in order to drop 10 pounds in about 6 weeks...so if I burn 800 per day I take it I can take in 2000 calories per day...correct?

Agree with being cautious re age and injury risk.
In the same line of thought, you have to get your body used to carrying the additional weight around. My suggestion; find a backpack that is comfortable to your body and add weight by loading it with bottles of tap water. Start with a low weight and walk for 30 minutes. Walk every other day adding a kilo, walk the same distance every time until you have reached a weight level you still feel comfortable (not damaging joints etc.) but also feels like an exercise. Once you have reached that point, increase the walking distance.
