i've been doing low carb paleo(ish - i do use artificial sweeteners from time to time) for about 1.5 years now.  i think the latest awesome recipe is for buffalo chicken salad

chicken:

2-3 lbs chicken breast

1/2 cup butter

3/4-1 C hot sauce (we use Frank's Red Hot)

put in slow cooker for 8 hours and shred.  we use this herb-ranch dressing (http://againstallgrain.com/2014/02/04/buffalo-wings-dairy-free-ranch-dressing/):

  • ½ cup mayonnaise (we make the Whole30 mayo at home)
  • ¼ cup coconut milk
  • 1 garlic clove, crushed into paste
  • 2 tablespoons fresh parsley, chopped
  • 1 tablespoon fresh chives, chopped
  • 1 tablespoon fresh dill, chopped
  • 2 teaspoons lemon juice
  • ¼ teaspoon onion powder
  • ¼ teaspoon sea salt

you can also use dry herbs, just use half the stated amount.  it helps if you give the dressing a few hours in the fridge so all the flavors can come together. made a salad out of whatever you want, top with shredded chicken and dressing.

Hi, I am considering trying Paleo and was wondering if you would answer a few questions for me?  Was it difficult to make the switch?  What type of diet were you on before Paleo?  Did you loose weight?  How did it transform your life and health?

Thanks

@jlynnnugent Absolutely!

So, prior to eating Paleo, I really just ate "healthy". I still ate processed foods, but because the label said that it was "healthy", I believed it. After some digestive issues, I decided to try it out. I mean, what the heck? Who cares if it went wrong.

I transitioned over night. The hardest thing to give up was grain. You don't realize how often you eat grains, until you stop.

I lost between 10 and 15 pounds (though I didn't really need to even lose that), and my overall health just skyrocketed. My strength is significantly better, my endurance better, and my sleeping better. My digestive issues are gone, and I don't ever crave any of the "non-paleo" foods. (Though, I do have ice cream on occassion).

Many believe that it is significantly more expensive to eat Paleo, but it isn't that much. I do have to go to the store more often, because fresh veggies don't last long.

@Awesome, @jlynnnugent! Give it a couple of weeks to get used to the shopping and finding foods, and you will notice a difference! I haven't been doing it as long as PaleoCrossfit, but I can totally attest to what she's saying! I was paleo for a while and started thinking "Man, this isn't making a huge difference, and I'm kinda lazy" so I went back to my old way of eating and in just a couple of days I was back to my old feeling of sick-and-hurting and the digestive issues just wouldn't cease. After promptly returning to the paleo plan, I haven't been sick like that since (and I've lost over 20 lb)! Also, it might be mental, but working out is SO much easier when you aren't eating so much artificial stuff. Give it a try, you'll notice the difference!

I am confused as to what exactly "is" Paleo?  I thought it was eating like a caveman - limited to game or organic meat, or anything that grows (fruit, veg, potatoes).

Now I see blogs for paleo baking ??? vegetarian paleo?? How can you be a vegetarian paleo?  Needless to say I'm very confused!  But I've heard the paleo diet is great for people with arthritis and autoimmune conditions, inflammation, etc., and I'd love to learn more about it.  Any advice would be appreciated!

Hi pilates lover,

Paleo or caveman is pretty much a diet based on ancient or caveman style eating.

There's some very good apps around that help let you know what foods are paleo "friendly" and which aren't (plus they tell you why).

Personally I have a few allergies and some more symptoms that looked like intolerances to certain foods... For many years I was given creams, drugs, diet plans and such that did nothing to help. I was given various diagnosis that ranged from fibromyalgia to hypochondriac 😉 most days I would wake up feeling as if I'd not slept and like I'd been hit by a bus.

I listened to an podcast of underground wellness that had the paleo chef on and her story and journey mirrored mine so much that I couldn't not try. I started pinteresting everything paleo 🙂

I kept a diary and for once put my mind into a good place to take paleo seriously... On day 3 I woke up feeling rested and that was just the beginning

My symptoms included :

Breaking out in gives hives every few weeks (usually across my neck, stomach and back)

Constipation (after 30 odd years this was nice to get rid of)

Chronic fatigue

Headaches

Acid reflux

These were the main issues and have all been dealt with by going paleo. I did tailor paleo to sit my needs so I allow some foods that aren't strictly paleo such as quinoa (acts like a grain so "hardcore" paleo will say it's not allowed.

I have said no to dairy (except for one milky coffee every other day or so because I like it) the reason for the dairy ban is because I was born with a lactose allergy and grew out of it but I think it only turned into an intolerance (recent tests showed a slight reaction dairy so think I'm right) ... But my milky coffee is going nowhere, he he he!

Sorry for rambling on, hopefully there's an answer in there somewhere

I think that a lot of plans are marketing themselves as 'paleo,' when they actually aren't,  in order to take advantage of the popularity of the Paleo craze.

I think the original paleo diet was exactly as you described: organic meat/ game and fruit & veggies. There are just many spins on it now.

Thank you everyone for the feedback.

Zot, I have already done a lot of good for myself by going to a naturopath and undergoing a medically supervised elimination diet.

My primary culprits were wheat and gluten. I also quit milk but I still consume yogurt and less frequently, cheese.  I just can't seem to shake those!  I had skin rashes that were mis-diagnosed for decades.  My naturopath took one look and told me it was dermatitis herpeteformis, a Celiac-related condition.  All the doctors that had looked at it and not one made a connection.  It wasn't until I took matters into my own hands and went to an alternative practitioner that I finally got a diagnosis.

I am going to look at the suggestions everyone offered, thank you!

Do you have links or names for the apps that help you figure out what's paleo and what is not?

Thanks for the feedback!  Since I originally posted, I did another elimination diet.  I discovered that any dairy - even the cheese and yogurt I was reluctant to give up - gives me inflammation and congestion and headaches.

I also discovered that eggs were causing my chronic heartburn.  I went strict paleo for a while but I find that I do need some carbs.  I did not have a bad reaction to rice, quinoa or sweet potatoes so I eat those a few times a week. It's the only way I can keep up on an almost-paleo diet - I just fell "flat" with no starchy carbs whatsoever.

...yes, I started in November. Thought it was going to be really tough to give up bread but after a couple of weeks it became easy... : )
