Hi,
I dont care about my heart rate throughout the day. And would like to turn it off to save battery. but I do want my device to use my heart rate to monitor my sleep and workouts. Does the sensor go on for these occasions if I turn "heart rate" to off?
Or any advice out there?

I don't how much battery life would be extended if the constant heart rate monitoring was turned off. Battery life is pretty good on my 16 month old Inspire 3. Probably 8 days or so and I usually charge it once it drops below 30%. You could try an experiment by checking the battery drain over 24 hours of normal use then leave it off for 24 hours and see what the difference is. I don't wear mine at night so my battery life may be longer than one that is worn 24/7.

I would agree with @lmacmil.
The heart rate is measured using a couple of low power LEDs, as I understand it, so they would have minimal impact on battery life.
To extend battery life as much as possible, the focus should be on reducing anything that illuminates the screen, because that draws more current from the battery than anything else. Any form of streaming, like using the phone GPS assist during workouts to track routes, will also reduce battery life.

You can turn off cellular data access if you're not using your phone GPS and also run in background. I think those would preserve battery life somewhat. You can always sync manually and if you're connected to wifi at home, you don't need cellular access.

You could manually turn the Heart Rate on and off when needed, if that works for you.
