Left back button should always take you back eventually to the home (watch face) screen
Sounds like your unit maybe faulty. You tried a reset by holding the left and bottom right button until you see the fitbit logo?
Obviously if it is a hardware fault with the left button it will not work correctly and won't hard reset.
If that's the case request a replacement.

I purchased my Ionic back in November upon release. This week the back button (not sure what the professional term is called) but the button on the left side has stopped working. I can no longer push it in, it is almost like whatever causes the tactile feedback no longer works. Has anyone else experienced an issue where the button doesn't work any more?
