Okay, I am the dude who had a Cassiopeia Windows CE Pocket PC and the first digital cell phone on the market way back before smartphones were an idea in someone's head.
Yet I have not purchased a smart watch up until now. You know why? Because no one could make one worth a **ahem**, that's why! I expect my mobile devices to remain mobile and not require to be plugged in every time I turn around.
The only plan is that there is no plan. My routine shifts around from one day to the next. I don't have the time nor the patience to have to plug a watch up every single night.
Enter the Fitbit Ionic. Now I own a smart watch. No, I don't want to play dick Tracy with a watch. I have a $700 Moto Z Force phone to make calls on. No, I don't need to reply to text messages and emails on my watch. These battery killing features were not advertised on the Fitbit Ionic, which is exactly one reason why I bought it.
Rumor has it, from a demo review that you can answer calls using Bluetooth earbuds with a mic through the Ionic. Well that sounds cool but is not why I bought the device. I bought it to upgrade my Charge HR. I am well pleased with it. It was well worth the $300 I dropped at Best Buy to get it immediately the second I decided I could swing the cost into my budget.
I was going to wait until Christmas to get it, but opted not to wait. The only thing missing is an Amazon music app and I have already submitted my request to Amazon customer support for that since I am an Amazon unlimited and Amazon Prime customer.
The Ionic does exactly what was advertised plus a smidget more. It's a 1st generation device. If you want Dick Tracy, get an Apple Watch 3 or a Samsung Watch and enjoy nightly visits to the charging station.
Battery life is the most important aspect of this smart watch. All the Dick Tracy and social media garbage can wait until someone either makes dramatic strides in battery technology or we have wireless power like the aliens did in Independence Day where you get an infinite amount of power just from being in the same solar system as your power source. Until then, I am quite content with what the Ionic can do on my wrist.
Thank you Fitbit! May this Christmas shopping season be an extra blessing on your stock and your bottom line.
