Case Discolouration

Has anyone had their Ionic discolour? I have the Smoke Grey/Charcoal watch and the case has started to go spotty. I only noticed it a week or so ago, but it looks awful.

I tried wiping it down with warm water... No luck. I called customer support and sent pictures and they suggested I use rubbing alcohol, and that did nothing at all. When I called support back I was told the discolouration was "cosmetic" and they wouldn't do anything. I work a desk job away from chemicals, it hasn't been in a pool - I wear my Ionic to workout and to track sleep. I'm appalled that support would tell me there is nothing they would do and I'm stuck with a 400 dollar tracker that looks like crap after only a couple of months of use.

Is this type of support typical for Fitbit? Has anyone else experienced the case finish changing colors?

Certainly doesn't look right. I haven't heard of anyone else experiencing anything like that. Do you use a case or anything to protect your Ionic?

No case. Just a naked, discolored Ionic.

Seems as though the aluminium has reacted with something. I would definitely push fitbit for an exchange. Like you said it may only be cosmetic, but you spent good money on the device.

Yes, I was just talking to support about my ionic.  I have the orange and blue version and the underside has faded to an almost white color.   Customer care refuses to address on my end as well, since it's "cosmetic".

Hard to fathom we pay the money we do for these devices and Fitbit won't stand by them. I have owned countless smart watches and never had the finish break down like this. Disappointing really... I remember seeing pleanty of posts on apple forums about the finish coming off the first gen apple watches... All of which were replaced without question.

This is one of the reasons I try and stay away from coloured anodized aluminium, the finishes tend to show defects easier. In my case I went for the silver as I knew I'd probably scratch it and the silver should hide it better.

Still, there is no excuse for a faulty finish, which this definitely seems to be. Did you buy the device directly from fitbit?

I loved the sliver and originally purchased it, but couldn't stand the purple band and exchanged it for the smoke/grey. I'm really regretting that call now. The device came from a retailer in Canada.

My orange Fitbit ionic has discolored less than two months of use. Customer support said it’s part of usual wear-and-tear and they won’t replace it. I’m appalled that that is their answer after less than two months of use. I have not taken the device swimming and I used sunscreen only twice..

I’m horrified at this news. My Fitbit is discolored on the bottom as well and was looking for answers .

seems fitbit doesn't care... 😞

Try calling again, I have mine 5 weeks and it turned white also, alcohol cleaning as recommended made it whiter. They are replacing it.

The problem still exists, not sure how to protect metal case from human sweat which is what it is designed for?

I have the same Issue with discoloration of the metal.

Fitbit refuse to do anything about it what a surprise...

"I've reviewed your case and confirmed with my team this is the normal deterioration of the actual product but rest assured this does not affect the actual functionality of your device. I appreciate your understanding with this."

As a LONG time fitbit owner I am disappointed by this product and most of Fitbit's products (come to think of it)

I purchased my Burnt Orange Ionic over the other two offerings because of the color so when the color fades and it looks more pale turd than orange then we have an issue. Since the primary reason I bought this was cosmeticcase1.jpegcase2.jpeg

Had I know this thing was going to fade this badly I would have either purchased a different color or gone with a different product altogether. Fitbit's response is totally unacceptable for a $300+ dollar purchase.

I will be more than happy to spend the cost of the watch to sponsor search result ads illustrating the issue.

On the bright side Fitbit's quality is so poor we probably wont have to live with the watches for very long anyways.

Sorry to revive an old thread but this one showed up in search so I thought it relevant.

I received a new ionic today because mine got water damage and died (from playing around in a children's 40cm deep pool ... it was thr first time I had ever taken it swimming so maybe not so waterproof!?).

I was surprised at just how much the old one had faded over 9 months since purchase. Here's a comparison. I did buy the orange for its orange colour and feel a little bit cheated that it doesn't stay that colour. MVIMG_20180813_185755.jpg

Such a shame. I have the charcoal and just realised all the back is discoloured.

not happy on such an expensive watch. You don’t get those issues with apple and the iconic isn’t too far away on price from it

I had the same discoloration of the back issue, they replaced it and it discolored again in only two weeks. I tried the rubbing alcohol again, but that only makes it looks worse. I decided to try a jewelry cloth, guess what!...the finish is restored!....give that a try. Mine is the light silver aluminum color, not sure if this will work for the darker metals.

Have the exact same problem with my burnt fade-orange after about four months of use, very noticeable now and it looks nothing like it was when purchased.

They should be lenient with replacements, as they seem to have enough stock everywhere: http://fortune.com/2017/12/15/fitbit-ionic-weak-sales/

Will try to get a replacement as well that I can use when 'dressing up', when it's not raining, nor the sun shining, etc..
