when will the Dexcom g5 system be able to communicate directly with the Fitbit ionic. is there a date or an expected time. I have found multiple articles saying that this is going to happen but no dates.

There is no official Dexcom product available for Fitbit. But I have made a compatible watch face and app for the Versa and Ionic that lets you watch your BG levels

By using the Dexcom Share feature. You login with your dexcom credentials and it will give the values on your watch.

Its like checking the mobile app for Dexcom, but you check your watch instead. It just gets the data from Dexcom’s servers and displays them on your watch. Nothing is stored or shared.
