While the battle rages on about an always on display as a feature requirement, I have randomly gotten one that I don't want and I'm trying to get to the bottom of why. Periodically, the display will stay lit up. It seems to happen after Fitbit Pay transactions sometimes. Not all the time, though. When this happens, dropping my arm to my side does not cause the display to turn off. Just sitting still does not either. I can manually turn off the screen with the left side button, but the next time it turns on, it stays on again. The only solution for this periodic behavior is a reboot. Calling it out as it seems a likely bug.
For those seeking an always on display, I'll tell you from having this periodic bug that the battery drains RAPIDLY when always on. I've dropped 10%-20% in an hour or two, easy. Since I don't typically notice this condition immediately (focused on work or wearing a jacket that covers the screen), I can't say exactly how battery is impacted.

Did you check the watchface you are using? To be sure, just try a watchface from Fitbit itself.
Some other watchfaces have the possibility off Allways On Screen.
Also if that happens, try covering the screen with your hand. If you do that, it should turn the display off? Does it do it again a short time later, or does it stop then?

After some q & a with support and my sending a video of the experience to Fitbit, they determined my watch needed to be replaced. They issues a replacement, but I have yet to receive it. It has been some time, so not sure what the hold up is, but they were certainly quick to offer support, which I appreciate.

I am having a similar problem. When screen wake is set to auto, the screen periodically stays on unless I turn it off manually. When screen wake is set to manual, my ionic periodically turns the display on for no discernible reason and does not shut off unless I notice and manually shut off the screen. I am using the original watch face and have not added any additional software. This only became a problem after I added a bank card and set up fitbit pay. Because I often don't immediately notice the display is active, my battery is constantly draining and the watch is requiring charging as often as once a day.
Ionic (31.1.16), iPhone 8 (11.2.5 (15D60))

I'm having the exact same issue. I'm not sure what causes it to happen it seems to be intermittent, although it happens more regularly with 3rd-party watch faces. If I restart the watch it starts working properly, but I haven't found any other way to fix it. Has anyone gotten a solution to this other than to contact support?

My ionic is having the exact same problem. It stays on and doesn’t turn off. Even after I manually turn it off it turns back on again. It seems to happen after using the Fitbit pay function.

Hey guys,
Same issue here. Started 2 nights ago. no obvious reason, I have tried:
-Soft reset.
-Cleaning the watch.
-unpair/pair to the phone.
-and finally just did a factory reset. nothing worked.
If I cover it with my hand, the screen goes off fine, but with the first alert comes in, it turns on and stays on. Screen is set to Auto.

I also get the same issue here with my ionic. Started like 4 days ago. Screen stays on with no obvious reason, I have tried:
-Soft reset.
-Cleaning the watch.
-unpair/pair to the phone.
-factory resets - twice. nothing worked.
Regardless the screen wake up setting Auto or Manual, it will come back on, just seconds after I press the left button to turn it off.

I contacted Support and they sent a replacement (still in route). seems like the only fix.
