Does it matter if you switch which arm you wear the ionic on?

I've had a fitbit for a few years now and always wear it on my left arm.  I have a nagging injury to my right wrist and have to wear a brace at times.  I want to say I had to pick which arm I wear it on when I set it up.  Now I cant figure out how to switch the setting.  Thanks

On the phone app, if you go to the Ionic page where you would switch clock faces or add apps, scroll down a bit and you will see 'Wrist Placement'; tap and choose dominant or non-dominant.

The difference is that the sensitivity is changed to try to ignore common wrist movements of dominant hand, such as brushing teeth.  I don't know how much of a difference it really makes.  I sometimes switch wrists during the day without bothering to change the setting, but I don't worry about whatever difference it would make in step count.  But if your switch is fairly permanent, it is probably worth switching the setting.

Before posting, re-read to see if it would make sense to someone else not looking at your Fitbit or phone.

Hello @Babpup thanks for bringing this to my attention. it's a pleasure to assist you with your inquiry. Welcome to the Community Forums too. Your willingness to help is always appreciated @JohnnyRow, thanks for the helpful and informative information that was posted.

I'd like to add that for wrist-based devices, it's important to specify whether you wear the device on your dominant or non-dominant wrist during setup due to the following:

  • The dominant wrist setting decreases the sensitivity of step counting and should reduce any over counting of steps when your body is not moving. Your dominant hand is the one you use for writing and eating.
  • The non-dominant wrist setting increases the sensitivity of step counting and should reduce any under counting of steps.

To start, the Wrist setting is set to non-dominant but you can change this in the Fitbit app. In your app go to Account and tap your device. On the page that come up you will find Wrist Placement to make the change.

I'll be around if you need anything else.
