First run comparo between New Ionic and my Garmin VVA 3

My ego forces me to mention before I continue that I am closing in on 88,000 miles of road running and have run with way too many devices over the last 41 years. With street creds out of the way, here are my impressions and some numbers from my 8 mile run this morning.

Set up was smooth and easy- after reading a lot of negative comments, I was pleasantly surprised how well it went.

I ran with my Garmin on my left wrist(dominant hand) and the Ionic on my right wrist.

Locating GPS was quick, actually a little quicker than my VVA3.

Ran on my 8 mile course that I have used for years and numerous GPS devices.

Results: Ionic measured 8.1 miles/ Garmin 8.05. Impressive!

Pace measured- Ionic 10:46 per mile/Garmin 10.51. Pretty tight.

Heart Rate: Ionic 151 avg/Garmin 142. I noticed that after 2-4 miles with HR within a point or two the Ionic got into the low 160’s while my Garmin was high 130’s- to low 140’s. From all my experience the Garmin readings were a little more realistic. Oh, as a guy closing in on 75, my Max HR is around 183. Do the math and note how much mine disagrees with the OLD: age minus 220 formula. Back in my 30’s,40’s and into my early 50’s my max was around 200-207! I might have worn the FB a little too low. Tomorrow I will move it up and run with my HR strap.

I am not much into steps, when you run 40-50 miles a week and do a lot of walking with my dog, Over 20,000 steps a day is usually pretty consistent.

if any members are still reading a couple of questions:

I thought I set cues for every mile- on the run it showed at each 1/2 mile and I never heard or felt a vibration from the watch alerting to the distance. Help

#2- I have read the manual and can’t  remove some apps that I know I will never use. The directions to do this seem pretty simple, I go to account, it tells me to tap on apps- I don’t see that. I see where you can add apps, but not how to delete them. Thanks for any help.

Geez, I can ramble. Might come with age, but my wife/best friend tells me I have been that way since high school when we met.

Hey, stay fit, it works. Nick

It seems you have to set the cues on the website to get them to stick. If you just set it at watch (and the app) it is temporary.

To delete an watch app (like Pandora), I went into the phone app and the Apps screen. Tap the offending app to bring up the screen that tells you all about it. There is a button that says "Uninstall" in red. You can't get rid of them all, but Pandora, Music, Strava, Starbucks, and Wallet can go bye-bye. The rest, your stuck with, but they are very small footprint.

As for the crazy heart rate, yeah, it does that. If you wear the watch the prescribed two fingers up from the wrist bone, it does diminish that blip. But it's **ahem** uncomfortable, and I'm always worried it's going to slide down.

For your two questions.

1.  I had to setup my queues in the app under the specific exercise. While it lets you do it on the device it didn't work well for me.

2.  Some apps, like coach, you can not remove unfortunately.....

You mentioned going to to the web site to get changes to stick. I will let you know.

Thanks again. Nick

setting cues on watch has bugs currently, hoping to see that fixed in next update. For now you need to set on website.

Zen Gardener, got that squared away thanks to you. Sorry to be a PIA, how do I get the watch to vibrate after each mile? You would think with all the devices I have had I could figure out all this stuff. I enjoy the forum, I am learning a lot. Remember, there is no finish line.  Nick

Wow, if you were getting the cues before on the 1/2 mile but could not feel the vibration, there either may be an issue with the watch (you cannot disable vibration), or you may need to set for the stronger vibration setting . On the watch in Settings app you will see the Vibration setting. When you tap that, it will change and give two vibrations to let you feel it.

If you don't feel anything, try restarting the watch. That's what the Fitbit gurus will tell you to do. Worst case, they will ask you to do a Factory Reset, and start over.

Had done all that. When I had tested I could feel both. Not that much difference. Will power down and see what happens when I run tomorrow. Might be I was running so fast I couldn’t feel it😜
