Fitbit Ionic Stopped Working

After using my Fitbit consistently for about 4.5 months I lost my charging cable on a work trip and let it die for about a month.  Finally ordering a new charging cable from Fitbit I plugged it in and the watch began charging.

I just unplugged the device to go for a run and found it completely bricked.  My app says it last synched at 50% battery... but it won't respond at all.  I tried cleaning the contacts (again, it was charging earlier so I don't think that's the issue), the 15 second button depress, and a factory reset.  There's no screen or indication that it's charging in any USB port that I've used before.

I bought the Fitbit new via Amazon and hope this won't be an issue.  I hope it's a fluke, but there seem to be a lot of users on here with faulty Ionics that the company takes months to replace.  I sent customer support an email, but if there's any advice here I'd love to hear it!

Found this from another user, and it worked!

----

    - plug your charging cable in a charger(for example your phone charger), but not in the Ionic yet

    - hold left btn+right bottom btn and while holding them, plug your charging cable into the Ionic (also try with the all 3 buttons if this doesn't work)
----

I'd like to know for what reason this worked.  If there's an impending failure of my fitbit on the horizon I'd like to return it before the warranty period is up.  Any thoughts from moderators?

Thanks!
