Does the fact it looks like fitbit has decided to ditch the ionic mean that we wont get any more firmware updates?

I think youre right with their losses. It baffles me as to why they have a factory reset option that doesnt even factory reset the watches to remove updates to it. To be honest they need to bung out one more update to remove the bugs theyve put out with the last update and then leave it alone since every update theyve rolled out for the ionic has had problems for at least some users.
