Fitbit Ionic not working

I've been an Ionic user for about 18 months now and, despite a few niggles, have been generally happy with the Ionic and the eco-system Fitbit provides.

I was really pleased new apps started to be released like the Couch to 5K Trainer and decided to use it yesterday and go for a run. It was all going really well when I raised my arm to see the progress of my run. To my surprise the watch did not light up and I assumed that it had crashed because the battery was about 80% charged. I was listening to music through Deezer at the time with Apple Airpods.

However, it turns out that the Ionic had actually bricked and was completely unresponsive. I tried charging the device with both a charger and a laptop, tried restarting it using the right and bottom left button and even tried to factory reset it by pressing all three buttons. I then spoke to Fitbit Support who confirmed this was the case.

Thankfully I have a repair plan with the shop I bought the Ionic from and they were able to exchange it for a new Fitbit Ionic: adidas edition.

Has this happened to anyone else? I don't know if it was the C25K app, Deezer or the headphones which cause it to brick and I'm slightly anxious to try any of these apps again!

CorvetteKid it's actually really common for firmware to brick devices. The thing that sets Fitbit apart is almost any other company will quickly send out a notice and pull the update then they do something Fitbit also refuses to do. They help the customer and provide a replacement.

I've had mine since 08/05/2018, updated it a few days ago and woken up today to a completely dead Ionic. It last synced at 12:01am and had around 52% battery. It's been charging for 3 hours and I've tried all trouble shooting that I've found in other posts but nothing is working.

Update: Spoke to customer service who were very helpful. Turns out I'm eligible for a replacement which is very fortunate.

Janey are you in the EU? If so you should have almost another year of warranty, you might need it for this replacement. If maybe we are getting somewhere with them and they are finally replacing faulty devices that they killed.

I am one of the fortunate users whose Ionic updated without a problem.  There seems to have been lately an update to the Android app as well, and it does improve syncing plus it lists the grams of each nutrient class for food (as opposed to merely %).  It works as advertised.  I am satisfied with it.  Looking at the repetitive and often non sequitur answers many users are receiving,  I wonder if the front-line responses are being given by a not-too-good AI. It sends unfazed by the obvious emotional content of the queries--anger in many cases. Advice: keep pushing until you get a real person.

I also have a fitbit Ionic that has stopped counting steps, logging sleep and tracking exercise that makes it a glorified watch and by the sound of things I cannot expect too much help from Fitbit

Just got a used Fitbit Ionic for Christmas. It froze every now and then so I factory reset - it didn't come back and now, 4 hours after getting it, I have a Fitbit Brick showing the magenta triangle and exclamation mark. Unbelievable that this issue has been known for so long but the company hasn't done anything about it.

We have 4 Fitbits in the family but until someone tells me there's a fix for this we won't have another one. Don't worry about thanking me for my feedback - I'll be going to another company to give them my money in exchange for something that won't become useless due to a software glitch that they can't be bothered to resolve. I'm in IT and, whilst it's true that firmware updates are risky, that's really only if the update is interrupted and if there's no backup/rollback facility. They used to be much more risky but responsible companies these days put measures in place to roll back/resolve any issues encountered - but not Fitbit, it seems.

Absolutely disgraceful behaviour for a tech company in this day and age.

Merry Christmas!

I switched to an Apple Watch a month ago and I couldn’t be happier, even after having to spend $500. I’ve read a lot of reviews and convos on here and it doesn’t sound like I’m the only one that’s made that switch. My boyfriend also loves his Garmin and has had no problems and has had it for several years 🙂
