Does anybody know my stride length I cant figure it out and I don't think the default measurements Fitbit are using are accurate because right now it says I have gone 3124 steps and only gone 0.6 distance that can't be accurate because there are at least 2000 steps in a mile so I have had to at least gone over 1.5 miles so you see theres something wrong here anybody please help. I am 6,4ft and 210 pounds does anybody know my stride length for walking and running? I have the Fitbit ionic right now the ride lengths are set to automatic but I don't think there correct and I think entering the inputs manually would be more accurate.

Welcome to the forums. I would be happy to help, @SunsetRunner. As you have guessed, it is very important to calculate then set the correct stride length, especially for those who are nice and tall - you! - and people like me who come in at almost 5’ Tap here to access a good article on measuring and adjusting stride length.

Stride length changes depending on the speed you walk or run also. Another way is to go for a walk at your normal pace with gps on. The fitbit app automatically adjusts your stride length under running just use that figure for walking and uncheck automatically set stride length. 2000 steps in a mile would work out to be a stride length of about 32.5 to 33 inches,.

When you are trying to calibrate, here is a formula I use to check the tracker measurements as well as to determine accurately using a measured mile what my Fitbit stride length should be set at. I spent considerable time determining the proper length to use and I check mine frequently against that same measured mile.

I am 6'4' so we are similar.  If I were you, I would start with an assumed length of 31 inches.  Go for a walk of an accurately measured distance, let's say a mile but can be anything.  Multiply the  steps X stride in inches. Divide the result by 12 and divide by 5280. The result here is a distance of .98 miles. If your tracker distance shown for the walk was anything significantly different, vary your Setting of stride length up or down.

The more accurate you set your stride length and make sure you maintain that stride for your walk, the more accurate your tracker data will be.  Good Luck!

criesterer, I failed to mention, in case it isn't obvious to you, using those same numbers I used earlier as an example, here's how to determine what Fitbit is using for your stride length. Distance X 5280 X12 divided by Steps. Ex: .98 X 5280 X12 divided by 2000=31" Stride.

ok thank you if your saying there is 2000 steps in a mile roughly and to set the walking to 32.5 to 33 inch what should I put for the running then?

so your saying for running it automatically adjusts the stride length?

Yes it will as long as you start the exercise in the app on the watch before you start running and everything has been left at its default values, so that gps turns on when you start your run. Also the app on your phone, computer and or fitbit.com have been left at default values.

______________________________________________________________________   criesterer, I didn't say set your stride to anything, either walk or run.  I gave you a method for calculating what it should be. You clearly need to reread my posts.
