Fitbit Ionic tracking steps when not being worn

I have had my second Fitbit Ionic now for 1 year and 3 months. Before that, I had an Ionic which stopped working after 1 year and 4 months. Is this just an inferior product?

My current device tracks steps even if I'm not wearing it. Yesterday I did a whopping 95000 steps while sitting in my office. I have restored the factory setting, deleted the app, reinstalled the device on the app a few times, deleted the exercises, but nothing seems to be working.

While the product works, it's great, but I can't purchase a new device yearly, this is extremely inconvenient and costly.

If this can not be fixed, I will unfortunately be moving to Garmin.

Welcome to the Fitbit Community, @Elicus_Marais.

Thanks for the details shared in your post and for already trying to resolve the issue. I understand how you are feeling about this situation and recommend confirming the steps to restart your watch in How do I restart my Fitbit device? I also would like to confirm if you placed your watch on a reflective surface or near an air conditioner or any other device that can provoke your watch to count steps.

You can remove the extra steps from your daily total by following the instructions in this help article: How do I delete steps and floors in the Fitbit app?

For more information about the accuracy of the Fitbit devices, please see How accurate are Fitbit devices?

Hope this helps.
