I swim every day for 2+ hours with my fitbit ionic. I had 10,000 steps before the swim and when I finished the swim I had 22,000 steps. Is their any way to lock step counting during a swim.

Hi @pcasey2020. Welcome to the forums. Although you won't see a step count in your swim activity, you are correct that the Ionic (and all fitbit trackers) are "always on" and counting/interpreting movement as "steps," even in activities that are not step based like swimming and biking. (Other trackers I've tried like garmin and misfit are the same).
If you search the forums you'll see that users have different opinions about whether "steps" associated with non-step activities like swimming or bike riding should be counted in daily step totals. Currently there is no way to completely turn off step counting other than manually entering a "driving activity" during the time of your swim. But doing so would also negate the activity minutes and higher calorie burn associated with the swim.
There have been several feature requests asking fitbit for more flexibility in negating steps (most are related to negating "bike steps"). I think this is a good generic approach you might consider voting for. Once you get into the feature request area, you can search and vote for some of the other ones.
