My Ionic seems to have lost its mind.  I took it off when I went to bed last night and it has currently logged 42,866 steps and counting!  There must be a way to fix this.

Is it near a fan or open window? Is it near something that is vibrating (you don't need to say what it is) ? if so then move it someplace quiet and stable, chances are that is what is causing the extra steps.

If there is nothing like that then restart the watch and see if it keeps happening.

Thank you for your response . No it has just been sitting on my desk . I have restarted it several times . I'm wondering if doing the complete factory reset is my only solution ? I'm starting to keep a log of what the steps count up to be and I will try to get through to them on the telephone before I do take such drastic measures

If there is no fan or vibrations near the watch when you take it off and it is still counting steps it could be faulty, but try the factory reset anyway and see if that changes things, if not take it back to where you got it from or contact fitbit customer support, hope things work out for you.

One other thing I've heard is that using a usb connected directly to an AC powered USB source might also cause problems, try charging via the USB on a PC (This is an unconfirmed theory so don't take it as gospel)

Please read @SunsetRunner Post.  A fan or something around it that vibrates will add steps

This is all excellent information. I did charge it on a USB/AC connection as a USB/PC connection is so much slower.   Thank you for your patience with me.  I also have a fitbit ONE that needed a firmware update - which I did today.  Interestingly, even though they had synced with the 43,000+ steps on my Ionic, after the firmware update they both cut back to 18,348 (no clue why that number was chosen - also unrealistic as I am disabled and am happy to manage a fraction of that).  From an objective point of view this is quite fascinating.

I have also changed the band to one of the magnetic mesh ones for comfort.  Could that somehow be affecting it?

It is nearly midnight here.  Both the fitbits are set well away from any fans or vibrations that I am aware of.  I am hoping they rollover to zero at midnight and this just goes away.    Else I will try to contact Fitbit support tomorrow.

Thanks again,

Linda

Makes no difference. PC/AC still counts on it's own

@SunsetRunner  If you have restarted it and done a factory reset as well as making sure it is not next to a fan, airflow or other vibration source then it may be a good idea to contact either Customer Services or the place of purchase for a replacement.

I found out how to turn it off! I don't need it for sleep logging, so I was HAPPY to know I can shut it off!

Yes @WendyB it does amuse me how some people brandish company names around in a fit of pique, failing to recognise that said company is likely to have disgruntled customers too (and then some).
