Iconic missing steps

Walking outside for 4 miles I easily achieve 8000 steps. Walk 4 miles on the treadmill at virtually the same pace I only get 5300 steps what gives?

Could it be that for some of the time you were holding the rails of the treadmill? Wrist-worn trackers are prone to missing steps when the arm is not moving normally as when you walk outside.

Thanks for that! Yes, I was. I am accustomed to walking outside but this week I am traveling using hotel treadmills. Makes perfect sense!
