Ionic Swim Tracking Intervals (vs. Garmin Swim)

I had my first go in the pool with the Ionic and was quite disappointed.  My previous device for this was the Garmin Swim.  There are a couple key capabilities lacking on the Ionic.

  1. It seems there is no way to track interval times.  What I could find was auto and manual "Cue" settings that auto or manually increment laps.  Is there a way to capture intervals and not simply the entire swim?
  2. Drill tracker.  This capability allows one to track a drill (or kick set) where the watch just times the interval then has the user enter in the total length.  This is needed when the use of the accelerometer is not useful.

The Garmin Swim also has multiple customizable screens, a SWOLF readout, etc.  I can live without these but can't live without 1&2 above.

thanks,

DN

i completely agree. I think the swim feature could be far better. adding the ability to do standard interval times with a push of the button it would seem would be a very easy fix!!

Yep, the Ionic has all the hardware it needs to be competitive with the
Garmin's.
I just bought the Garmin 735XT which has all the features of the Garmin
Swim, plus it allows you to load swim workouts to it. If the Garmin is as
good as its specs, I'll return the Ionic unless of course Fitbit provides a
nice update - (hint hint). I think Amazon has a 30 day return policy.

So I too have been disappointed with the Ionic swim features after being used to a Garmin Swim Watch. Generally the Ionic is not good for intervals / sets

- underestimates laps usually by 1 lap a set.

- adds a lap onto my rest phase even though I did not swim anywhere

- the app does not show set times just calories burned per set. Not sure what swimmer would find this useful.

The Garmin is significantly better at these things, but perhaps not as pretty a watch....

I agree on what you guys wrote so far but your expectations were/are way too high in my opinion.

Garmin Swim it's a very mature product that was build with a single purpose in mind.

Ionic is a multi purpose watch that was launched pretty recently and it's software it's still... umm... how shall I put it... very very young 🙂

Fitbit had only 1 device made for swimming before the Ionic and from the looks of it they were never really focused to develop it to a high standard... that's why I never had high hopes for it's swim features in the first place.

What I would like to see from Fitbit is a roadmap with the software features that they plan to implement this year so everyone will know what to expect from this watch... We all could get a better image of the direction this watch is heading.
