Ionic Swimming Lengths Error

Replies are disabled for this topic. Start a new one or visit our Help Center.

I went swimming with my Ionic for the first time.  I use a 25-yard pool and 72 laps which is equivalent to a mile.  I manually selected "swim" on my watch and pushed the start button.  At first, it seemed to be off only a length or two but by the time I finished 72 lengths it was displaying 48 lengths!  I bounce off the end of the pool when reversing direction and would think that would update the count correctly.  What am I doing wrong to get the length count wrong!?

A warm welcome to the Community @TTerrificYour Fitbit device automatically tracks the duration of your swim and the number of pool lengths you complete. To track your pace and distance, enter the pool length in meters or yards into the Fitbit app or on your watch before starting your swim. Keep in mind the pool length you enter remains the default length until you change it. If you swim in the same pool often, you don’t need to input the length each time.

You may want to check the following as this can be why you're not getting accurate information, when swimming:

  • Stopping to rest midway across the pool
  • Resting for longer than 60 seconds after completing a pool length
  • Changing stroke type midway across the pool
  • Swimming with a kickboard or not using your hands
  • Swimming less than the minimum duration set to be auto-recognized
  • The units for the pool length setting don't match the units you use for your Fitbit settings. For example if you measure length in feet and inches, and specify a pool length in meters. For more information, see How do I update my Fitbit settings?

Hope this helps! Keep me posted.

I swam for the first time with my Ionic last night and was really impressed.  Without me having to tell my watch it calculated that the pool length was 25m and that I was doing breaststroke.  It also calculated my 68 lengths correctly and vibrated every 100m as I set this as my cue distance.

Very impressed.

HI, Thanks for your response.

I have set the pool length to 25 yards which is the actual pool length
according to the placard on the "24 Hour Fitness" wall. I swim 72 laps each
time which should be just over a mile. I use hand paddles and swim fins to
put more energy into the water for a shorter period of time. It takes me
about 60 minutes to swim the mile. I have set the Automatic cue to 50
yards, so it displays a cue every two lengths (or not depending on whether
it measures a length completion).

I thought it would be wonderful if I didn't have to count laps manually and
thus the Ionic.

Today I tried three times to get the Ionic to measure the lengths
accurately. In each case, it seems to be very accurate for the first 2 or 3
lengths, and then it may or may not register the next one. When I reverse
direction after two lengths, I look at the watch (brief stop) and sometimes
it changes to the next length while I am watching it and sometimes not. If
it doesn't change it may not change even after two, four or six or more
lengths.

What intrigues me in your response is that you mention a "minimum duration
set to be auto-recognized." Is the auto-recognition adjustable? I have not
seen this adjustment in the "settings" either for "Swim" or the Ionic
system.

Again - thanks for the help.

@BridgfordRam your Ionic didn't calculate that the pool size was 25m, that's just the default value built-in the app. It showed your stroke style because you manually set the cues and the cue distance, otherwise it won't show. You're lucky it counted properly. Give it a bit more time and post back 🙂

@TTerrific same here, starts OK and after 4-6 lenghts it goes mad.
