Ionic Sync still not working

I see there are quite a number of other Fitbit Ionic users with syncing issues.  These are dating back to last autumn, most of them seemingly unresolved, at least according to what I can find in the various threads.

I have been a loyal, reasonably happy Fitbit user, going back several years to my Fitbit One, followed by a Surge for a couple years (had to replace it twice due to the band wearing out, but it basically worked fine for the duration of its use), followed by a Charge 2 for the last year (had to replace the first one rather early, but the replacement worked fine).   I recently purchased and started using an Ionic, and while I really like its features, it has me ready to drop Fitbit forever due to its syncing failures, which seem pervasive within the customer base, and seem to be mostly unresolved after several months.

I purchased my Ionic a couple weeks ago, and after the initial setup it worked fine, including syncing, for the first couple days.   Then it stopped syncing with my Windows phone.  After attempting several of the suggestions on my own, I contacted Fitbit support.  Together we walked through the various steps, all to no avail at first.   This included turning Ionic off and on, re-pairing with the phone, reinstalling phone app and re-pairing, dropping the Ionic from my account, adding it back, doing a complete factory reset, yada yada.  Eventually we got it to sync with my tablet, and I thought the problem was fixed.   But no, it only synced until sometime the next day or so, when it began failing to sync again.

I walked through many of the steps again, and also tried syncing with my Windows laptop.  I eventually got it to sync with the laptop, but I knew it was not truly fixed because I still could not sync with either my phone or my tablet (and yes, I made sure that Bluetooth was only enabled on one of my Windows devices at a time).

And, after a couple days, it stopped syncing even with my Windows laptop, and here I sit over a week later, with no successful sync since January 30.  I even tried working with Fitbit support again yesterday, but although they tried to be helpful, there was no success.  They just walked me through the same steps I had already tried.  His last suggestion was to ask whether I could "find an Android or iOS device to try to pair with", just as a test to see whether my three Windows devices ... three separate devices, mind you ... might be the problem.   I told him (a) all three devices worked fine with my Charge 2 prior to my Ionic purchase, and (b) there are plenty of Android and iOS users reporting the same syncing issues.  It's clearly a Fitbit issue.  He basically agreed, and said "development is working on it".

It's really a pretty pathetic situation that has apparently been going on for months.  I do not fault Fitbit support at all.  Those poor people are caught in the middle.  But Fitbit management ought to be ashamed of themselves for this horrible debacle.

I am about to try another factory reset, drop and re-add to my account, etc, as a last ditch effort.  Of course, I will lose all my stats for the past 8 days, but I have to try something.   One other user apparently tried this strategy for a while, and the reset seemed to work for him, but only for a few days and then it would fail again.

I am going to try it again, myself, and if it fails again, then I will reluctantly return the Ionic under the warranty period.  As I said, I really like the device itself.  But it's pretty useless if I can't track my stats.

I'm 63 years old.   I've been averaging over 20,000 steps a day since August, with a number of days over 30,000, and a few over 40,000.  I've lost over 40 pounds.   My resting heart rate has dropped from mid 70s to low 60s/high 50s.  My blood pressure has dropped from chronically high to normal.   I'm in the best shape I've been in since my early 30's, and tracking my stats over time has played a significant part in that.  If Fitbit is now going to talk a great game but deliver poorly on it, then I'll take my game somewhere else where they remember how to treat their customers.

Hi Steve,

This Ionic syncing problem is REALLY frustrating - I've returned my Ionic to store today. It seems we're acting as the beta testers for a device which wasn't fully tested in every aspect of its performance (pressure to start earning on their investment?).

Anyway, trying to avoid red herrings, do you have any other Fitbits paired to your app or bluetooth? If so, have a look at my two threads here ...

Thanks, Meldrewman.  I had already removed my Charge 2 from my account as a test, but it still fails.  Like you, I actually wanted to use both the Ionic and the Charge 2 under different circumstances.  e.g. the Charge 2 has a very low, slim profile that is better suited than the Ionic to wearing while out skiing wearing several layers of clothing.  But I was willing to sacrifice the Charge 2 for now if I could get the Ionic to work.  But nope.  No luck.

I also had an Aria scale on my account, which I removed, again as a test.  Still no luck.

One strange thing I've seen is that if I manually pair the Ionic with my phone or laptop, the Fitbit app asks whether it can unpair my device from the tracker.  I let it do that.  OK, that's not the strange part ... I figure if it wants to do the pairing, fine, as long as it works.    The strange part is that with the phone, it will generally come back and say that it's now paired and connected, but the syncing still fails.   On my laptop, when it attempts to do the pairing itself, I now eventually get an error "Bonding failed. Restart the app to try again.  Bonding in progress."

Restarting the app repeatedly sometimes eventually gets it to pair.  But regardless, it never syncs properly.  Sometimes it will appear to do a partial sync, and I'll see some of my stats on the dashboard in the app.  But if I look at the online dashboard, there are still no stats, and it still says the last sync was January 30.

Hi Steve,

Your experience, and those of mine and other threads on the community, serves to show us just how widespread the scope of the problem is.

One of my reasons for returning my Ionic was that I'd lost faith in the specific device and I may well get another and battle on - because its features are really good - when it works!

The fact that yours is gving issues without another Fibit paired blows Fitbit's statement (that it's due to multiple trackers being paired) out of the water.

They have a major problem!

Days later, with my sync still not working, I saw there was an update for the firmware but I was not one of the lucky (or, perhaps, unlucky?) ones chosen to be offered the update first.  Regardless, it got me out of my func and I decided to try to get my Ionic at least ready to receive the update, and maybe even cajole the Fitbit powers that be to send it my way.

I did (another) complete factory reset of my Ionic, letting it also then automatically update to whatever version of the firmware they gave me, and also removed and re-added the Ionic to my account.

It only upgraded to the 1.16 firmware I already was using, but, voila!  Synchronization began working again.  I was also able to download 3 Pandora channels in roughly an hour.

Mind you, I am not foolish enough to believe this will last.  Afterall, I have "worked the steps" before with Ionic to get it working, only to have it fail again in a couple days, and others have reported similar BS.  But I'm happy to have had this little bit of success for the time being.

I did lose roughly two weeks of stats in the process, since my prior successful sync on Jan 30.   But I just added walking activities for each of the missing days, entering what I roughly recall as a daily average for those days.  Not much I can do about the missing resting BPM stats, but oh well.

I'm still really appalled and miffed that the Ionic has proven to be such a lemon for so many, so far.   It shows such promise.  Hopefully things will get better.

HI Steve,

Fingers crossed that you're sorted - the problem being that this issue seems to materialise out of nowhere!

I've had a look at that firmware update on the update page ...

... it's here for those who haven't seen it ...

https://help.fitbit.com/articles/en_US/Help_article/2302

... and it concerns me that the problem isn't specifically mentioned.

It's still a watching brief, isn't it?

Thanks Meldrewman.  Yeah, I'm not holding my breath assuming this will last, but we'll see.  I had similar concerns about the update, i.e. that they didn't specifically mention the syncing issue.

Son of a b.  Once it started working yesterday synching with my phone, it worked all day.  But now, today, no synch again.  Un-f'ing-believable.

Well, here we are a month later.    I ended up replacing my Windows phone with an Android (Samsung Galaxy S8+), not because of the Ionic synching (or lack thereof) with my old phone, but for a lot of other reasons.   My Ionic had some erratic synching with the S8 for the first day or so, and then settled down and worked great for a couple weeks, UNTIL IT DIDN'T.   I've now gone 5 days without a successful synch of the Ionic with the S8.  I am now in the process of doing YET ANOTHER factory reset of the Ionic.   Of course, by now, I am past the 45-day return window of the Ionic, so I guess I'm stuck with the bloody thing regardless.

Needless to say, I am rather po'd.  What a piece of crap this Ionic has been.  Shame on you, Fitbit.  Shame on you, for releasing such a boat anchor, and one that is still extremely problematic for so many people, so many weeks/months after the release date.

And on and on it goes.   I completed the factory reset last night, updated to the latest firmware, and it started syncing again.  For one evening.  And then, after a successful synch this morning at 7:01am, I can no longer get it to sync.   AGAIN..

Wish I had read Steve's comments before missing the return period. I have enjoyed various Fitbits in the past but am so discouraged with the Ionic synching issues  that I'm leaving the product line altogether!
