Ionic randomly stops recording workouts

Replies are disabled for this topic. Start a new one or visit our Help Center.

I've had my Ionic for almost two weeks now. Randomly, during runs the Ionic will stop recording for no reason. I have Auto-Pause and Run Detect both turned off, as was suggested in another thread to make the GPS more accurate, so those shouldn't be a factor. This has happened three times out of five runs since I bought the watch. When it stops recording on its own, it also doesn't automatically add the workout to my stats. I had a Surge for almost three years before buying the Ionic and never had any issues like this. Is anyone else experiencing this, and if so, have you found a resolution to it yet? I'm very close to returning the Ionic at this point.

The Ionic with exercise set to run, did work for the entire 10k with show cues off.  I don't know for sure, if that is the key to the shutdown in the past but; I will turn show cues back on tomorrow night when I run again and see what happens.

@casperghost Thanks for your reply and for providing those details. I'm really glad to read that Ionic work for the entire 10k run.

Yes, please try turning the "show cues" on. Check what happens and let me know if the exercise stops.

Thank you so much for contributing to this thread with your experience. It is very important for Fitbit and for users too.

I never use cues. When running, walking or cycling I don't have really problem. Not sure, but in my case all non-GPS exercises can fail while those which do connect to GPS work. The issue appears when I start Workout or Elliptical or Treadmill exercises ( non-GPS ). As I said, there is ALWAYS short vibration when exercise is terminated. At least this way I can quickly restart it. Also it never happened that exercise has been terminated more than once. After restarting the exercise ( not Ionic, to be clear ) it seems to work fine. Nevertheless, it is annoyance as I lose few minutes from some sessions.

So far the Ionic has not stopped during exercise,  even with cues turned on.  The only other thing that could have made it happen was the GPS.  It was having a hard time finding a connection the nights the  exercise stopped on it own,  I was in heavy tree coverage area.

This issue started happening to me when I turned on cues at the 1 mile interval. When I have gone for a run the past few days the Iconic will buzz then stop recording activity at the 1 mile marker. However, when I turn the tracking back on to continue the run, it works for the remainder of the run, even though that is past 1 mile (typically 3-4 more miles). I have restarted the Fitbit, turned off notifications during exercise, and will try without cues tomorrow.

@BostonBetsy what I have found usually cures the crash at first cue issue is to interact with the watch prior to the first cue. I simply swipe the center information band once or twice and the Exercise app does not crash.

Granted, you'll need to do this for each activity as it's not a permanent fix.

I'll try that!

@SunsetRunner Thanks for your reply and for sharing all of those details regarding the activities that fail. Thanks for your reports.

@casperghost I'm glad to read exercises are not stopping now. I see some similar reports regarding the GPS. Our team will keep investigating this. Thanks for your reports.

@BostonBetsy Welcome to the Fitbit family! Yes, please try all of that and let me know how it goes. Also, check if the activities that are stopping are GPS or not.

@sfringer I hope you're doing well! Thanks for sharing some tips that have helped you out with this. I'm sure users will find it helpful.

Hey Santi,

I tried the GPS function again this morning after turning off the notifications and mile cues. I also interacted with the face (swiped left then back) before hitting the first mile. No issue today! I don't run with my phone so I don't need notifications, but having to turn off mile cues is annoying, so I am going to try again next time with the mile cues back on.

@BostonBetsy Thanks for your reply and for providing those details about your run and the workaround you tried.

Very interesting, I'm glad that worked for you. You could do that in the meantime this gets sorted.

Please try with the cues back on and let me know the results. I'm sure a lot of user will find that helpful too!

I have had the same problem. Notifications have been off since I got it. I am going to try to also turn off the "All-Day Sync" on my Fitbit App on my phone as I usually have my tunes playing from my phone during indoor workouts. I am thinking it kicks you out of a workout while the Fitbit is syncing. Will update this post once I get a good idea if that is the problem or not.

Today it happened again to me. This time under "Workout". Usually it didn't bother me as it used to happen at the beginning of workouts but this time ai lost over 1hr of activity. Instead in the log appeared few minutes of "Run", probably from autodetection. I am really pissed. I was almost done with workout and lost whole activity. Again, short vibration of watch appeared before termination of workout. Is that another issue that Fitbit pretends doesn't exists? It has been reported by number of users long time ago and there are no any updates addressing it nor any feedback from the company.

Almost 2 months since the last time the Fitbit Moderator even cared to reply to this post and it's still an issue! Why would Fitbit keep ignoring blatant software problems with your most expensive tracker? First Fitbit I've ever had and so far it's been one issue after the other!

Worst part is everything worked fine out of the box when I first got it a few months back but every single update made has only added up to a long list of weird and annoying issues and bugs that makes using this tracker frustrating!

Get things resolved!!!

Unfortunately, I very much agree. I've had no issues since I made some changes to the settings until yesterday when it stopped recording several times and then closed the program while I was out for a long run. There's no point in having GPS if the watch stops tracking. Moderator, please chime in. What's being done about this?

So after turning off the syncing from “all day sync” on my phone app I have not had any issues with my fitbit during a workout.

I have all day sync on still, but haven't had any issues since turning off the mile cues.

Same for me... With Automatic Cues turned off there's no problem but still that shouldn't be the case... I like my Cues specially during swimming when you can't just be looking at your watch constantly... Hope they come up with a real solution and not just a workaround that limits my watch functions

Thanks! I got the email with a case number for now... we'll keep you posted when there's further development
