So I got my fitbit ionic yesterday and today when I woke up it showed 70k extra steps. Without reason. Cant understand why. Tried restarting the watch but it shouldnt be so bad. I mean its a **ahem**ing $300 watch.

Welcome to the Community @PDeshpan! It's pretty weird the 70k steps that you got. You can manually log driving to delete the extra data for this day.
Also, please make sure that you've restarted it by following these steps. This can avoid any malfunction in the future. Please reply to the following questions:
- Did you wear your tracker at night?
- Did you notice anything different the day before?
- How many steps you did the day before?
Hope this helps!

Thanks for responding.Apparently the steps dont show up on my activities so I cannot delete them. But they show up in a total. Looks like a BUG in Fitbit Ionic honestly. Maybe a calculation mistake or some kind of randomness. I have attached the pictures from my activity logs.

I had the same issue. Once was Friday night, i woke up to 40k steps and it was on the charger. Again last night it was on the charger and i woke up to 4k steps. Last night it was charging in the floor so there was no vibration that could have been causing this.

Thanks for the extra details that you've shared @PDeshpan! The steps that you're getting don't need to show up in activities for you to delete them. You can just log driving for the morning or part of the day and the extra steps will be deleted. I would like you to double check that you've restarted your tracker by following these steps.
Keep monitoring your data.

That does not work. I logged driving for the whole day. It did not change anything. I tried restarting my FITBIT IONIC many times. No use

I tried logging "driving" for the whole day. Did not work. I tried restarting the FITBIT IONIC multiple times. No use.

This has happened to me every night. I have seen other posts stating that it adds steps during charging. Mine does it while I am sleeping. I have not experienced the issue while driving either.
I wear my Ionic while I sleep. Every night since I got Ionic I have had between 4k and 17k steps on my tracker when I wake up. I never experienced anything like this with other fitbit devices.
I have done multiple resets, to include a factory reset. Nothing has helped.
I am considering returning my Ionic...

My Ionic was working just fine for the first couple of weeks. Today I plugged it in to charge and a couple of hours later, hit my daily goal. It gave me over 13000 free steps!
I don't see how to log driving in activities, I added a driving option and created an event during the time it was charging, but it didn't change the steps at all. In fact, it still shows almost 16000 steps on one-third of a mile of distance. You'd think that alone would be a red flag.

To all experiencing this steps problem during the night: I do not recognize this problem. The only two problems I have with the Ionic are:
1. When walking my dogs after midnight, the Ionic recognizes the steps I have made, but not the minutes I have walked.
2. The heart rate sensor seems sometimes inaccurate. I have had it now for two days in a row that during walking or excercising my heart rate went up from a 104 bpm to suddenly 167 bpm. In both instances this number was exactly the same. Weird, isn't it. Whenever your HR goes up to that amount, you must feel it, either by a very bouncing heart or shortness of breath due to the high HR. In both cases I felt nothing at all. I'm a physician, so I know what such a HR means for your body.
kindest regards, kuzibri

The last 2 nights I've woken up with 6000+ steps on the Ionic. Bad part is I wear my Blaze to bed and the Ionic just sits on a table. I know it's the Ionic because before I sync the Blaze has less than 100 steps on it. If I look at the chart none of these 6000+ steps actually show up either.

I noticed this issue just once. I turned off the ionic to charge and wore my Surge to bed. The next morning I left the Surge on and switch out to the Ionic and ref soccer for the next six hours. When I completed a sync of the Ionic later that day it doubled my steps. I am not sure if this is an actual bug with the device or a bug in the system that added the Surge steps to the Ionic Steps once I turned the Ionic back on.

Unfortunately I had to turn this thing off and shelve it. Too many bugs. My Blaze has none of these problems. The Ionic again started counting up phantom steps while I wasn't wearing it. I was in bed and within 2 mins it added 100 steps and it was growing.
I'm not gonna take it back as its showing signs of wear on the frame but I can't use this right now so it's a paper weight until they fix it.

I just purchased my Ionic Saturday. The first day it showed 50K excessive steps. I assumed that was just a glitch in getting it started and removing my existing Fitbit Alta from the process. I do not wear the Ionic when I sleep, but when I woke up this morning & put it on, I had over 8K steps. I'm going to return mine.

For what it's worth, back when I had the extra steps issue, the suggested move was to restart the Ionic, which I did. I haven't had any issues since.

Also, it's pretty amazing how the system works seamlessly with Ionic, Charge 2, and Blaze. It manages to keep everything straight even though I use all 3 (though the Blaze a lot less nowadays).

I’m on my second ionic and both have done this. I’m about ready to accept losing the last 4 years of data and switch to a Garmin Vivoactive 3

Just got an Ionic for Christmas. Took darn near forever to set up and sync with anything, and as of this morning, I have 50,000 steps - all while I was sleeping. I must be a heck of a sleepwalker. That, or this mighty pricey watch has a problem...
