Ionic volume controls not showing

I have been using my ionic with Bluetooth aftershocks and iPhone SE without issue but have now changed my phone to Google pixel 3a. Ran today and headphones connected to Fitbit, phone is also connected to Fitbit (notifications were coming through while running) but when I press the left hand button for volume control or skip track, I get "pair phone via settings app" - but surely I wouldn't get notifications if it wasn't paired? Any help appreciated as I'm not tech savvy and my brain is now a bit fried with it all!
