Location turned on for Firmware upgrade?

why do I have to turn on our location services on my cell phone to push a firmware upgrade to my Iconic?  That makes absolutely no sense to me at all.   My phone will download the upgrade from my wifi, so location should not matter.

Agree 100% - the excuses I have read elsewhere that 'Google required the change to the software to track all the time' simply means to me that Google wants to steal my location data without my permission for whatever reason - and makes me even less likely to continue using this product.  Trying to connect my Ionic to a computer instead of my smartphone and finding that avenue may be closed, definitely going to look for alternatives at this point.

 

Insult to injury is the ruining of the fitbit happened after I had purchased and been using it, so definitely feels like a bait-and-switch.
