Skating

Even my new fit bit ionic does not seem to understand how ice skating relates to steps. It gets my heart rate and active minutes. I get a couple hundred steps a game, i actually see more steps walking between locker rooms.

You are not stepping per se. You are taking a step and then sliding for what would otherwise be many steps. I don't see how a pedometer could track that. It's possible starting an activity that uses the built in GPS could produce better results but you would need to have a constant signal, but you still wouldn't get the steps, just the distance.

My experience with trackers is that steps and ice skating don't make much sense. However, back when I started using the old BodyMedia device and then switching over to the Flex and then the other Fitbit devices is that the calorie count is quite reasonable. I used to ice dance extensively with a partner and at that time I used these devices to lose about 50 pounds and maintain that loss. The calorie deficits tracked well with weight loss and maintaining about equal intake and expenditure using the calorie estimates from the units has kept my weight relatively constant over the last 10 or so years.
