My new Ionic will not count steps in the Treadmill or Walk mode if I'm holding the handrails during exercise while I'm on the treadmill.
Any ideas?

If you need to hold the handrail for stability, you can hold on with the ha d opposite of where the watch is and just swi g your way h hand and it WILL count the steps. If you need 2 hands to hold the handrail it won't count them.

That is true. It is a wrist-worn fitness tracker, which uses a 3-axis accelerometer to detect movement and count steps. While holding the hand rails on the treadmill, your wrist/arm is not moving, so it cannot detect steps. Some have reported wearing the tracker on the ankle in order to count steps, but I have not tried that - my arms swing naturally while I am on the treadmill, so it accurately counts steps for me.

My Fitbit Charge HR did recognize the treadmill while holding. Bought the Ionic at Kohl's, and the salesman didn't know crap. Guess I should have investigated further before buying.
Major disappointment!!

USAF Larry, I wonder if the auto pause function is activated? You should be able to turn it off by going into the setting (gear) function on the "Run" or "Treadmill" window. I turned it on once and any time I held onto the treadmill and stopped moving my arms it would pause the tracking of the workout and resume when my arms started moving again. Turned auto pause off and it works fine.

I really expect more from FitBit than this .... this is like original PC's ... great hype with minimum function ...

This is not an acceptable solution. I just got my Ionic yesterday to replace still functioning TomTom Spark 3. The Tom Tom had a simple solution to the treadmill problem, it simply asked you at the end of a treadmill workout if you would like to adjust the distance .... Simple enough?
I bought the Ionic on the premise that the fitbit software would be better supported than the TomTom since TomTom had announced they were officially out of the wearable business. Apparently I was wrong.
I wouldn't care if I could go back in and manually add the distance/steps but apparently you can't do that either.

We've been asking for the "adjust after" feature for a long time with no movement. I've started to manage to get it fairly accurate by holding my arms in roughly the same position throughout the entire treadmill run, but it's still not perfect. Before that, I would run the ionic in treadmill mode and then create a new workout with the correct distance and remove the one without the correct distance, to get the full heart rate data. But it shouldn't take two steps.
