I want to have multiple work out mixes, some of which will have the same songs. Right now, when I go to upload those playlists to the watch, it's not clear whether or not the watch is storing the same song twice or not.
Is it possible to confirm that the Ionic is smart enough to only store a single copy of each file, and then reference that file in multiple playlists on the watch?

It is just storage. If you copy multiple play lists that contain some of the same songs you will have duplicates. It's no different than if you copied them to a PC.

When you make the playlist, it references the songs in their locations on the computer, without hard-coding the path, which would break things when synced to the Ionic. If you don't have two copies of a song on the computer, the Ionic will not make a separate copy of that song. It makes sense if you think about it.
See for yourself--open up the playlist file itself, and see where the references are for the songs. If you're not seeing multiple locations for the same song, that should settle it.
You can also try it on your computer, make playlists with some of the same songs, and see if you get duplicates. I'm certain you won't.
