I'd like to be able to record a Swim with the gps so I can see the distance, time and map afterwards in the fitbit phone app.
At at the moment I have a surge and I start a cycle activity, put the surge in my hat, do my Swim, then I can see it afterwards even if it says cycle. I've tried re categorizing it to Swim in the fitbit app but it doesn't let you.
So a question to to those who have the ionic:
- could you please try a cycle activity and then see if once it's in the app you can change it to Swim and show the map of your route
- can I create an app for the ionic that would start an activity called Swim that uses gps and I put it in my hat like now, but I get the correct activity name and map once synced back to the phone app?
many thanks for your help

Are you doing that swimming laps inside, or open water swim? I'm curious because some say GPS doesn't work well in a pool.
Are you aware that the Ionic has a Swim function that supposedly tracks distance/laps, I believe without GPS?

Sorry. I should have been clearer.
I am starting to do triathlons and the Swim is outside. I can't use the pool function because I am not doing lengths so distance would be off. I'd love to be able to see a map to show where I swam along with distance and time similar to a cycle or run. I'm happy to put the watch in my hat to get a good signal and not worried about heart rate.
I know on my surge i can track a swim as a cycle but I can't change the activity in the iOS app to Swim afterwards, I can only change it to something else the surge can natively gps track, like run or hike.
Im wondering as the ionic can track swims if that would allow me to track the activity as a cycle and then change it to a Swim (being it can natively track that). If not, has anyone developed an app that turns on gps and calls it a Swim???

I'd be interested in the answer to this as well. I didn't have my ionic when I was doing OWS but will do them again next year and would like to see that. I thought I saw a setting (and believe i set it so) for use GPS when swimming. Since I've had the ionic I've only been in the pool and it works fairly well there.
As regards to your question about editing the activity to change from cycle to swim, it looks like to me the only thing I can change is the start and finish time when I try to edit an activity.

yeah i'm totally interested in this as well.
I would live the fitbit ionic to do well.
Currently the swim stats aren't shared well.
good stats and pictures sharing would really help promote fitbit ionic in the social media community.
when i do open water swimming and showing the route that would be really cool. i guess we will have to build our own apps!
Lets do better than garmin!
