I have tried to to download the app to my watch via the instructions. All other apps are available - the spotify app is a clear rectangle and doesnt load. I have a google pixel 2 XL with android 10, the watch has the latest firmware as there is no update pink ribbon visble when I check for updates.
What else can i do???

I appreciate that you mentioned you have a Pixel 2 XL with Android 10. I would like you to log out from your Fitbit app and force quit it. After this, please log back in and check if you're able to install Spotify app.
