Hi,
I can't comment on the new ones, but I have had mine for 2 years and taken it swimming plenty of times with no issue.
Others have reported failures (like yours) which would suggest a manufacturing issue or seal failure on those watches as it should be fine for general swimming use.

Fitbit says the Ionic is water-resistant to 50m so if you have a problem with using it in water then you will be covered by the warranty. See: https://help.fitbit.com/articles/en_US/Help_article/1598/
re the warranty. If you are in Europe the warranty is 24 months so you may be still covered
Best AnswerLast weekend I took mine into a pool for the first time and it died fast and hard. Totally bricked. Pretty shocking for an item intended to be waterproof. Instant E-Waste--ricing, button pushing, charging all doing zilch. For counterpoint, my iPod Nano went through the washing machine this year and after keeping it in rice for a couple of days to pull the moisture out it revived Lazarus-like and soldiers on to this day (this old thing is from 2006!)
To Fitbit's credit, Support picked up fast and was to the point--my replacement is on the way and has a shippping # and all. My guess is that initially (not sure of what span that means) there were significant manufacturing issues with the waterproofing of early run units.
