After the latest andriod app update my ionic sync capabilities are hit or miss. It may sync once a day, twice a day, not at all or whatever it feels like. It worked like a gem prior to this latest app update. And yes I have repaired with my phone, I have shut off both my phone and watch, and done all the other things fitbit advises to do and it still does not work properly. How do I get back to the old app version where I know it will work, if that is even possible. Why Fitbit do you not test updates before you issue them... Has anyone found some time of workaround for this issue?

Personally with only a ge updates in last January and February I've found each update an improvement.
Since the problem started with an app update, the first thing I would do OS delete the Fitbit app, restart the phone to clean up memory then install a fresh copy of the Fitbit app.
I would also remove the Ionic from the phone's Bluetooth menu of trusted devices.
As for asking a user to re-pair with a phone, I would never ask this since I'm unaware of what this procedure would be and no Fitbit user who claims they have done this stereo has been able to describe what steps to yale to re-pair a tracker.
Connecting a tablet to the phone OS a step that only the Fitbit App is able to do.
