Any diabetics using the FB?

Wondering if there are any diabetics out there who are using the FB and working towards weight loss?  I'm insulin dependent and trying to lose weight but more importantly trying to regain my health and physical strength while balancing everything.  A challenge a day! Love to hear your stories....

Becky,

I am 63.  And I have a 30 year old son.  So we have some common ground.  You will find a lot of people in this thread are closer to our age.  Welcome in and post whenever you want.  Together we share lots of advice and have some lively discussions!  Hope you like it here!

I am really surprised at the list of vegetables to avoid.  I get a lot of diarrhea but have never been diagnosed.  I did realized that the salad bar at a local restaurant is often a trigger, but other salads don't bother me, so it could be preservatives they put on it.  Even a side salad at that same restaurant sets me off.  Dr Fuhman's diet includes most vegetables, including the ones on the list to avoid, so you would probably have to take that into consideration.  Otherwise, being a vegetable lover, I consider Dr Fuhrman's diet one of the best around.

Also, my pharmacy changed manufacturers on my Metformin and I had a lot of bowel problems at first, but it was either caused by something else, or my body got used to the new med.  It just seemed odd to me that the bad diarrhea began when I started the new med, and would stop if I skipped it for a couple days.  I'm back to taking it regularly and I'm fine now.

Hi Becky -- Welcome to a great group. I am 68, been type II for 20 years, over weight (getting better since fitbit) and relatively fit. My biggest issue is remembering I am diabetic when I don’t have any other related issues and maintaining the rigor of keeping my sugars in check and my A1c where it should be, I want it and where my Dr. wants it to be. For me the problem areas are sugar spikes after meals and glycogen absorption when I am not getting sufficient carbs in my diet and always while I sleep. You will find a lot of support and good information in this group so ask away. I have found that the diversity (multi-national nature) of this group fascinating, as you can note similarities and also identify differences (good and bad) between Diabetes care in different countries.

Diarrhea is common with Metformin generally in some people. Others (apparently like you) adjust to it relatively quickly and with others is stop and start. I have never experienced changes between manufacturers, but I am sure that the inert components could have an effect. If it persists and becomes troublesome, make sure you discuss it with your Dr. and see what he/she might suggest as an alternative. Fortunately there are many, unfortunately they are more expensive.

My name is Mary Lynn. I am 68 years old, and have had diabetes for several years. I take metformin and Victoza, and do pretty well if I don't eat too many carbs, and exercise every day.

Hi @Beckyb54 I'm 62 and T2D. I'm currently taking metformin and having to watch my diet carefully as recently I've been experiencing a variety of diabetes related issues. I have a Flex and a One and thoroughly enjoying walking and motivating myself to lose weight and get healthier.

Today has been a bit of a slow day as I've spent most of it sitting at a desk. Need to get out and about a bit this evening now.

I had HUGE diarrhea problems with Metformin too. I think this is quite common.

@soapsuds I had that problem too and they switched me to metformin ER (extended release) and the problem went away.  Thank goodness!  I almost didn't want to leave the house for awhile!

I guess my doctor just does not have my interests at heart.

I know what you mean by not wanting to leave the house. We had a two mile walk all laid out back and forth so we were never tooooo far from our house.

@soapsuds  Maybe your doctor is just not that informed.  If you aren't seeing a diabetic specialist it is not too hard to understand why the doctor you do see missed this.  Don't blame him or her, just find a specialist.  Also I recommend seeing a diabetic educator once a year so you can get the latest and greatest diabetic information and have someone who is an expert help you incorporate it into your life style.

@dancefoxtrot  I just called Dr. Fuhrman's website.  They said his diet does help with IBS and he even has a whole webinar on the subject.  So I am more excited than ever to incorporate the two philosophies (low FoDMAp and Dr. Fuhrman's) together.  Since I see the dietician on Friday I am hopeful that some of my Dr. Fuhrman's diet information will have arrived by then.  I believe my dietician has mentioned him before.  I can't wait.  In the mean time I am trying to eat soothing foods to keep the pain down.  I really appreciate your patience with me on this!  I will keep you all posted.

Minto, I would like to hear more about the statement I have indicated.  I seem to have more trouble when I include carbs.  What am I misunderstanding?   It seems as time goes on I have to eat fewer and fewer carbs.
I have improved my AM fasting blood sugar by eating one scrambled egg before bed.
I have been taking Metformin for 7 years without a problem.  I didn't experience any effects until this current fill of a different manufacturer, and it's possible that it was a coincidence and the Metformin wasn't causing the problem after all.

Hi again. I'm so glad for you that the 2 approaches can work together. Hopefully the soothing food is health food. Can you login before you get the materials since you ordered and paid for it already. Then you can view the webinar. Hope that the dietitian is wise and can help you integrate your 2 condition diets.

Keep us posted what you find out as others may benefit from it.

All the best,

Barbara G

I am 65 years old and on insulin as well pills. I have lost about 50 pds . It has taken me 11 years! Talk about slow. I have cut my insulin in half this past summer.
Only because I am honest with my self. I use Lose It web site to record what I eat each day. I mean everything that goes into my mouth. I walk 20,000 steps a day.

Just because I walk doesn’t help with losing the weight. But it helps me with my sugar count each day. I promised my self I will walk until I get to my goal weight.
Then am hoping just to do 10,000 steps a day. 20,000 takes me all day long .

Losing weight is hard. Another tip do not eat after 5 or 6:00 p,m. A snack maybe to keep your sugar level. This has been really hard for me to keep on track.
My husband loves to eat out. So I keep on him to please eat early. Then I only eat light. No bread or potato. And that kills me too. But it has been so nice
to be able to shop for new clothes. And I feel so much better.

Good luck

Becky, I like to blame my husband for my bad eating since he is the one who brings the bad food into the house, but unless he is holding me down and forcing the food into my mouth, I am the one who is choosing to eat the wrong foods.  Those of us who have this disease have to own it, and do what it takes to control it.

Best Answer

@sinch  We do have to own this disease. I so agree.  No blaming other people, no blaming genetics or over eating or being fat.  It is wha it is.  And we have to protect ourselves from long-term effects and complications.  For me that is the biggest over-all goal I have.  The short-term one is to lose 50 pounds.  The very short-term is to lose 5 pounds and walk 40000 steps a day for a whole week.  Baby steps are so important!  Don't forget them!

Welcome in!
