Wondering if there are any diabetics out there who are using the FB and working towards weight loss? I'm insulin dependent and trying to lose weight but more importantly trying to regain my health and physical strength while balancing everything. A challenge a day! Love to hear your stories....

I meant 4000. Just got new longer nails today and my typing is horrible! I would not be able to do anything else but walk if I walked 40000steps a day! Sorry!
Clumsy me!

Hi,
I've been reading this with quite a bit of interest as I 've been plagued with diarrhea for a couple of weeks now. I've been a T2 since 2010 and have been on Metformin for 3 years (controlled with diet and exercise previously). I had forgotten that Metformin can do that. I'm 60 and was losing weight with WW before I fell last December and tore my rotator cuff. Had surgery in May and am trying to get back on track.
Haven't gotten back into daily walking yet, still pretty tired when I come home from work, but I need to. I still get about 10,000 steps a day and 12 flights of stairs in at work though. I will check in more often for motivation.

I'm so glad to hear you meant 4,000! I was wondering how you could do 40,000. If I don't exercise, I get very few steps. Also, my house is on 1 floor with just a basement, and even when I do the basement steps, the Fitbit doesn't always register them. I have a bad knee and I have trouble walking, and doing steps, so it's probably the way I do the steps that keeps it from registering. I am not trying to set any records. I got this Fitbit with some giftcards I got from my son. I would not have spent the money myself. I am 69 years old with a lot of medical problems. The most steps I've ever done in one day is 6000, and sometimes I don't even reach 1000. But it keeps me aware of how much I'm moving and encourages me to move more. I want to keep moving because if I don't I might end up needed a cane, a walker, or even a scooter. I would like to be mobile as long as I can.

Diane you are doing very well with the steps and stairs you are getting from work! Sure, you want to add some formal exercise if you can, but what you are getting is great, especially working with an injury.
I would wait a while and see if the Metformin is causing the diarrhea for sure. You shouldn't be having it now, since you have taken the Met for a while. It could be from something else. I'm still not sure what mine was from, but I haven't had it for the past 2 weeks.
Good luck to you!

@sinch sometimes we have to do just what we can manage. Baby steps. Lately "baby steps" has been my mantra. That is all I can manage. I think you are doing great! Keep going!

Thanks Elendil. I will keep "baby steps" in my mind and just keep going. I feel that if I am moving more with the baby steps than I would be if sitting in my recliner, then I'm making progress.
Good luck to you!

Hi Diane
10k and stairs at work sounds great. What do you do on your days off to move and burn those cals? Did you only change the metformin co. or make other food or medication changes?
Diarrhea is not pleasant that is for sure. Welcome to the forum.

Concentrate on low fat under 40 grams a day for over 160lbs. and your burn # should be more than your intake of food. Use My fitnesspal.com to track. Think of it like accounting just make sure you have enough money to burn. Keep it simple.

Insulin is a fat storage hormone so make sure your insulin intake is correct as you reduce carbs & calories. Are you working with a dietician who specializes in T1 as that may be helpful? I ignore the Fitbit if it thinks I need more cals than I think I do. Burn 500-750 more calories than you eat and the weight should drop down 1-1.5 lbs a week on average. Eat lots of non starchy veggies and lean protein, and healthy fat like avocado, salmon, nuts in small portions. Avoid junk food, sweets, and high refined carbs.
Best,

Stinch,
Please anyone can correct me about the steps counting on your fitbit. But I read you have to walk so many steps to equal one step on your fitbit. Like one flight of stairs counts as one step. I was renting a home in Cape Hatteras this summer. From the car up to the main level of the home was 32 steps. If any of you have visited the Outer Banks and rented homes you know exactly what I mean. Believe me
the fitbit never said I climbed 32 steps each time. I probably went up and down at least 10 times a day easy.
So keep walking those steps . They are easy after awhile and you won't lose your breath. It was
kinda funny at the house in N.C. that I could walk up them with ease. Some of the others you would
think they were having a heart attack. Did I feel sorry for them ? No, I am 65 years old and no problem.
We also climbed the Cape Hatteras light house 250 steps one way. Still didn't say I climbed those steps on the fitbit. I wasn't as fast going up that . But I did it. And lived. LOL

JerriAnn, I am trying to understand what you are calling "steps" on the Fitbit rather than flights of stairs. If I walk, and count to 100 steps, it registers as 100 steps on my Fitbit. I think for stairs, you have to go up an elavation of 10 steps for it to register a flight of stairs. I think the 32 steps you walked up would still only register as 1 flight of stairs. I think if you lived in a split level home that has 3 or 4 steps between levels, these would not count as a flight of stairs. For me, since I have trouble walking up a flight of stairs, many times it doesn't register them, even though it is a full set of stairs from the basement to the living quarters of my house. If I go up and down 5 times a day, it might only show up as 2 or 3. Or sometimes none. I go slowly, and just one step at a time. If I try to go fast, that's when it does register. But it's a flight of stairs, whether I go fast or slow. Sometimes, when I am walking very fast around Walmart, it will say that I did 3 flights of stairs, even though there are no stairs in Walmart.
You are very fortunate that you could easily do those stairs at 65 years of age, but I think you are wrong not to feel sorry for those who have a problem with it. We are all different. Some of them could be in poor medical condition and could very well have a heart attack doing those stairs. It's ok to be thankful that you can do it easily, but don't scorn those who can't. I have that opinion because I am one of those who couldn't do it.
