Fitness to Avoid Recurrence of Breast Cancer

ANSWERED

I have had breast cancer twice in my life, both on the same breast.  One was Stage 1 ordinary breast cancer, treated by lumpectomy and chemo.  The second was Paget's Disease of the Breast, stage 0, treated by removal of the nipple and radiation.  I just had my annual, very thorough, mammogram, in which there are hundred of layers of tissue shown, which are then immediately examined by a radiologist.  My radiologist, whom I have never met, but from whom I will definitely receive a bill, was named Dr. Payton.  God bless him, Dr. Payton assessed my mammogram as normal.

One of the guidelines in avoiding a recurrence of Breast Cancer is avoiding weight gain.  I had my 4-month checkup about two months ago, and fortunately for me, at age 76, my family physician pronounced my health status as "awesome."  The one negative in this exam was a weight gain of 25 pounds, for which the cure will be facilitated by my Fitbit watch.  The cause was almost daily consumption of Kroger Light Salted Caramel Ice Cream, topped with chocolate syrup which hardens in the fridge, and topped by literally a gigantic mountain of delicious whipped cream.  I can taste it in my imagination.  And that's where it should stay.  My sweets now consist of Cranberry Pineapple juice, seedless grapes, and bananas, of which I still consume too much.

The guidelines for avoiding the recurrence of breast cancer include, among others, the consumption of a largely plant-based diet, with a bit of low-fat animal protein included.  I just made four baked apples with a dot of butter, a small amount of light brown sugar, and nutmeg.  I complained bitterly to myself about the difficulty of coring the apples, even though I have an outstanding apple corer.  You can probably see why I fell into the habit of daily ice cream sundaes.

Believe me, if I have a bowl of grapes and cut up bananas, washed down by cranberry-pineapple juice, the taste is very rewarding to my tendency to overindulge in sweets.  Have a great day and may you all become increasingly fit.

Best wishes on your quest for better health.  I love ice cream too and now it has to stay out of the house.  On a positive, when I plan an ice cream, I have a lot of fun looking on yelp and trying new concoctions - but not more than once a month and I share it with my daughter vs getting one for each of us.  Anyway it tastes better heaped with anticipation. 😄
