They recommend 10,000 per day.

But its not about steps. Its 90% food and 10% Exercise. So to lose weight you just need to watch what you eat and cut back there.

Steps are not going to help you lose weight.

You need to eat less than what you burn with your 78,000 steps and other activities.

It is largely dependent on what you eat.

Someone once told me that "You can't out-exercise a bad diet."  And unfortunately, it's true.

For me, I have to walk a minimum of 10-12,000 steps per day, plus a diet of <1500 calories-per-day in order to lose weight.

Steps alone do not equate to weight loss.  Sure, you are obviously doing something to warrant the step count, but the bottom line is are you burning more calories than you are taking in?  Pure and simple.

If you are doing serious workouts at the gym or lots of pushups, sit-ups, etc, you could be regaining muscle mass which adds pounds.

Not saying my way is the right way, but I'm burning about 2,800 calories a day according to FitBit and intaking around 1,200-1,400 calories a day.  Result?  Net calorie deficit of around 1,600 at most.

I do a lot of walking (about 6-10 miles a day).
