I just got a new scale. In fact, I got an Aria that goes with the FitBit site. For the first week, I weighed in every day, just so I could understand the fluctuations that can happen on a daily basis. Yes, it went up and down a few times, and worried me a little bit, but the trend was downward, so I did not let it worry me too much. Since then, I am planning to weigh in once a week, on Wednesday mornings. This is the morning I figured out is the least threatening day of the week, because all the damage of the weekend is likely worked off by then, etc.
If you have a new scale, or one you have not used in a while, you may want to educate yourself by doing a daily w/i for a week, but then, once a week should be fine. You may feel more rewarded that way, too!

Please never weigh in every day or every week. Weigh in every two weeks. Give yourself some time to get your head around the goals and become use to the goal and remember it every day. Then mark your calender for a weigh in day 2 weeks from the day you start your program. It takes time to get use to these challenges. Be well and you are doing a great job!

I weigh in every day. I have for years. One of the tricks with weight maintenance if finding someone who is succesful and copy what they do. Most of my friends who seemed blessed with thinness actually weigh themselves daily and are concious maintaing their weight. I think it is an effective habit if one is making a lifestyle change instead of just going on a diet.

I weigh myself everyday also and have for years. It keeps me in check to ensure I am not going overboard!

I would like to comment that the different reading is happening within seconds of weighing in...not different times of the day. If I took the first reading I would go about my day thinking I lost 3 pounds...when in fact I stayed the same or went up a pound.

I weigh in daily to keep myself on track and knowledgeable. You learn some insight weighing in daily like "Maybe I shouldn't have eaten that donut." or "Maybe I should have stayed on that treadmill at 4+ MPH for a full hour and pumped iron to burn off my fat percentage."
If I overate on bad food, normally my weight jumps up by 1 pound. Knowing that eating the extra doughnut or drinking naked juice was bad. Then I won't do it again.

I weigh in once a day. Once a week at the same time each week probably gives your body time to adjust to the changes you are making in diet and exercise, but it's just my habit to weigh daily. Then I look at my weight graph on fitbit about once a week to see how I am trending and to adjust my goals. If I am consistently exceeding a goal then I bump it up a bit.

Question....when you have a bad day of over eating does it usually take a few days to hit the scale? I'm not talking having a very salty day..that I know will show up as water weight...I mean like that day you ate two donuts.

If I waited 2 weeks and then did not loose anything I would be so down...but your probably right doing it daily is not working for weight loss...I feel it's just keeping me in check. I don't know what is the answer...I heard one of the girls on my golf leauge lost 30 pounds over winter....can't wait to see her....very happy for her so maybe she will inspire and yet I don't think I will ever be able to do it....what helps me is I have a talk with myself for the day and before an event to plan on what I will allow myself so sometimes that helps me stick to my goal.

Jillo,
Aw, don't beat yourself up over a couple of donuts! Yes, you'll likely retain water due to the salt for a day or two, and many (myself included) find that the added carbohydrates will assist in the water retention process. It may take a couple of days to come off.
My hunch is that you won't see it reflected in the scales for long, though. You'd notice it probably 24-48 hours after the treat, and it's gone after about another 24-48 hours.
Remember that so much of this is individual in nature…you could ask 10 people and get 10 different answers because we each have a unique experience in that. So these numbers are my own experience.
Also, remember that the donuts have holes in them, and that you've cut a few calories out by not having a cream-filled donut! Hey, rationalization works!!!

I refuse to weigh myself - at least right now. I have been sweating over the scale numbers since I was a teenager - always worried about the ten or fifteen or twenty or thirty pounds I think I have to lose. I am 53 years old this year, and I have finally decided that I will not be a slave to the number. I am watching the food I eat and using my fitbit to show me how much I should be moving to keep myself healthy. I know I am losing, but somehow I think I will jinx myself if I start looking at the number on the scale, instead of the energy input/output values that I get from eating right and keeping my old arthritic butt moving. I hope the jeans get looser - I think that is what will make me happier.

Laughing...thats pretty funny except I like the ones with pile of suger cream in the center so not only did they leave the center in they added to it...now you got hungry for one I got an overachiever because I was 8092 steps over my daily goal. I got on the scale this morning and I'm up a pound....I was 1500 calories in and 2487 calories out....I think I deserve a donut...lol...Actually it was hot and humid yesterday and I tend to swell in the heat....I do drink a lot of water but today I better get more in.

Scales are arbitrary and fickle...and I weigh every morning at the same time and always in the same attire 'cuz I'm too tired to do anything but the bare necessity.

I got my Flex in November, and did GREAT until April - lost 12 lbs which is unheard of for me since I never lose anything!
In April, I got hit with the unexpected death of my mom on the 10th, and then again with the unexpected death of one of my oldest and best friends on the 28th. After the natural grieving process for my mom, my dad and I had to begin the work of driving to her house and cleaning it out, readying it for sale. I thought I was eating well, and I still wear my Flex every day and I still log just about everything I eat and monitor my steps. A lot of restaurant lunch and dinners though...
Yesterday, after about a 4-week hiatus, i stepped on the scale and found to my horror that I had gained 6 pounds. SIX. In a month! Maybe some of those are time-of-the-month pounds, or water, but most of it is the fact that I had not been monitoring myself and my status every day as I had been. I feel like, for me, every day or every other day is a necessity in order for me to stay on track. I know I've worked too hard to let this 6 pounds stay on.... and now it's back on the scale every day for me! 🙂
