Is fitbit premium worth it?

ANSWERED

Hello I am new to fitbit and was wondering if parts of my dashboard and trainer are going to dissapear after this first week. So far I really like it and feel like its helping me. What is the difference between the regular and premium service and what has helped you reach your goals more effectively?

Could someone tell me if the Premium service food reports break down things not shown on your daily log, like Saturated Fat/Cholesterol/vitamin & nutrient data if it's included in your log behind the scenes, does that stuff show on premium reports? I am trying to decide if Premium is worth the cost for me, and I do like the numbers. I've been using without premium for almost a year now, and it's still pretty great without paying, but I've gotten more interested in tracking some things that don't show - and calculating myself at every meal is time consuming. I would really consider premium if there are reports that show a ton more detail without the work!!

I just bought the bullet and purchased premium... I will be blogging/vlogging about it soon.

FYI, the phrase is to "bite the bullet", like what they used to do instead of using anasthetic for dental work, etc. I hope you accept this in the spirit of helpfulness I intended.

I agree. I'm surprised more people don't voice this sentiment.

It doesn't work on my phone app. I need to use the PC. I don't like that at all.

I bought it a few montsh ago - looked at it for the first few weeks but quickly lost interest, so wouldn't renew it

if you like it and it is working for you, go for it

everyone is different

i.e. my sis uses weight watchers, for me the point system would drive me mad, counting calories is one thing, but adding points as well.....

Can someone with a premium membership tell me what kind of reports you are able to export and print?  I'm thinking of getting it if only to take the reports to my doctor.  I tried the free trial and the only report I was able to export was a graph of weight loss and BMI.  Not real helpful for what I'd like to do.  If it can show nutrition reports, showing trends of sodium, cholesterol, that kind of thing, would be helpful.

iI qould like to know this as well.  Does it break down carbs/sugar/ i'm so new to this?

I would sign up for premium IF the sleep export data provided more information, but the info that is provided is not very detailed at all.  I would like to see the actual start and stop times for each level of sleep (or awakeness) it detected each.  But without that, I find the $49.99 price too much for what you get - especially since you have to sign up for the whole year with no pro-rated refunds.  I would be willing to pay somewhere in the $25 to $35 for what is provided currently.

As a startup founder, I can see how you'd be upset for something that may originally be free and after a couple of years it isn't.

Here is how you may think about the situation:

  • We make a one time investment for the hardware device. This hardware device comes along with a free app and which allows you to track your fitness activities, heart rate, sleep patterns, (information) related to nutrition and dietary intake. There are other cool features like built-in GPS in order to track your run/other activities. The newer Fitbit has video capabilities and there my be other features that I am not aware of. --> These are a lot of cool features to be had for a single investment. Contingent on how you take care of your device, it has a higher probability of lasting a couple of years. So if you made an initial investment of $360 (plus minus) and the device lasts for 3 years, then the actual amount comes to about $10 a month or 0.33 cents a day.
  • If you'd like additional services like more detailed analytics, Fitbit coach and any other services that could help you optimize your workout routine and your overall quality of life. Then, it's only fair for Fitbit to charge a bit more, in order to provide a quality service/product to their customers.

Some startups, specially when they are just starting, do offer more than one service for free. Take for example, how Paypal used to offer money to individuals in order to incentivize them to create and account/use Paypal during it's first couple of months of existence. I don't think that Paypal does that anymore.

We want Fitbit to be profitable, so that we can continue making use of the services that they have to provide. For us, let's think about how we can up our game and make more money, so that we can invest some of it back towards improving/optimizing our fitness routine and the overall quality of our lives.

I hope my answer is able to address some of the concerns that you have raised.

Note: I do not work for Fitbit, I do not own any stocks for Fitbit. And Fitbit has not paid me to type this. Smiley Happy

Feedback for @Fitbit

I haven't seen any updates on how the 'reports' section/area is marketed/displayed during the past couple of years that I've been using this service.

As a consumer, I have to search and do my own research, in order to find out what the reports section actually offers. Even if I do that, I may or may not have a very clear perspective of the actual value that the reports section provides.

By doing some design-thinking sessions and conducting some experiments (maybe start with A/B testing with a smaller sub-set of the consumers), the team at Fitbit may come up with a better way of marketing the product.

By enhancing this particular feature, Fitbit may offer a service to more consumers that will help increase their quality of life. And by doing so, Fitbit may bring in more revenue, that it may choose to reinvest into more experiments.

@genidma  I have been a user of Premium since 2011 and now sadly we see it being discontinued possibly because of the lack of uptake and maybe lack of marketing/direction..  When my next subscription is due that will be it....Smiley Sad  automically cancelled.

Like you, I want to see Fitbit profitable and in this difficult competitive market and this link Aug 6th has some interesting reading...

I used the free trial but that's it. I didn't need it to lose the 40 pounds I lost and as long as you track your food and exercise on fitbit that's really all you need. I tweaked the food plans on fitbit to less calories when I plateaued.

Sadly premium service was discontinued. Only Coach premium is available. Not what I wanted.

@AJanice: just curious, what were the features from old Fitbit Premium you are missing (that are presumably no longer available, even in Coach Premium)?

Trainer and activity report which were tabs under the premium tab on my dashboard.

Right now I am leaning at showing my doctor the info on my cell phone. He can reap whatever he wants with the info posted there. My doctor is pretty much 100% digital so a print out would never get filed, as far as I know.

So if that is the main benefit for the add on program then it is not worth $50 to me.

By the way, we love your country! I would visit if I could but it is not in the cards.

I liked trainer too.  Sorry it is gone.

But you can export Fitbit data by month and save it to an excel workbook to review activity.  You can also check your weekly calorie burn and activity in the app, so there’s that.
