Welcome to the next Challenge!
This one will start today, May 30 and go to July 4th. That gives us 5 weeks to work toward our next set of goals as we try to lose weight or maintain in a healthy way.
Everyone is welcome to join this terrific group. You can post once weekly or every day - whatever you like - to share your journey, give and get support, offer advice, get some tips. We have celebrated each other's successes, and empathized with the setbacks. I personally found, the more I respond to others, the easier it is for me to focus on my own journey in a positive way. We have seen great progress in previous challenges, in weight loss, health, learning, and non-scale success, because we are in it together and focusing on being healthier and living better lives.
Some of the terms used to report our weight:
USW - ultimate starting weight - the heaviest weight when you began to lose
SW - starting weight for this challenge
CW - current weight for the day you report in
GW - goal weight for this challenge, for Halloween
UGW - ultimate goal weight that you intend to reach eventually
Some people also include their height, their age, their BMI.
All you need to do to join, is start posting, usually with some of the weight information.
I do find this to be an amazing group of smart, wise, kind, and determined people. I look forward to this next challenge, and sharing this journey and all we learn with each of you.

@em.kz So glad you checked in. Hope your summer is going well. I think of this as one big learning curve as we figure out every new situation we are in, how to manage our hunger, our emotions, our need for activity, food choices, etc. Can you keep some healthy snacks around that you like? Just be careful of eating out of boredom or just because it's there.
You have been doing an amazing job.

@Bobbinyc Glad to see you checking in. If you did lose muscle weight, that is one kind of weight that would be good to gain back. I wonder the same thing sometimes. That's why I measure myself once a month. As long as my measurements aren't getting larger I'm relatively satisfied. I'd rather be strong and a little overweight than weigh less and be all flab with no muscle.
I'm glad that you're enjoying your veggies. I've never liked vegetables, so I consider people like you fortunate. You actually like food that's good for you!

@TT_is_me I know exactly what you mean about logging food. I'm the same as you - if I log my food I'm much better at staying away from snacks. Seeing that red X when I go over my allowance bothers me if I see it too many times in one week. Whatever works right?
With everything that you have going on it's great that you're making time to keep working on the weight thing. I know how frustrating it is, but if we don't do it we'll probably certainly keep gaining.

Story time: I had a very restless night. The dogs reacted to something/someone out beyond my fence in the evening. My big dog gets protective if someone is lurking around. At 12:30 I took them out to pee and they went bonkers again, barking at the back fence. At 12:40 I turned my bedroom light off, ready to settle in when they caused such a ruckus I got up to close the window, afraid the neighbours would complain. They dashed to the front of the house where I found a MAN looking in my front door!! I turned to put pants on and he disappeared. A few min later some dogs three houses down were barking too.
Called and notified police that someone was around the properties and they sent a guy to check it out. He was surprised to learn he'd been right at my door. I asked the neighbour this morning to check his video cameras. And then at 7am some dude in a hoodie on a bike was on my sidewalk under my trees, peering up the street, took something from his pant leg and put it inside his jacket. His pockets were heavy. He kept watching up the street then turned and left in the opposite direction as he'd been facing. Sigh...It's a decent neighbourhood. But warmer weather brings out the nuts.
My daughter finally said, "Maybe your paranoia about locking the doors is right." Ya think???
Anyway, I had so few steps yesterday...I guess the fitbit on the wrist doesn't track when you mow grass. Or carry laundry baskets. But I did decide to take the dogs out separately for their walks so I got about 6800 tracked. I think I wore it while pacing the house all night, so I'll have to check my totals...haha.
I had maybe 4 hours sleep and Mom is about to call to go walking. I'll have a nap later.
Ok, everyone have a great Wednesday. Drink lots of water!

So I finally got back to the gym after 3 days of not working out due to cross-country travel, jet lag and overall a lack of motivation. I had been unusually sleepy all month and getting out of bed in the morning was a REAL STRUGGLE, something that is unusual for me, as I am usually right out of bed as soon as I open my eyes. This has not been the case for the past 2 months which is probably why my weight loss is dragging. BUT.... today the scale FINALLY WENT DOWN!I will hold off on the weigh-in stats until next week b/c I want to stay motivated. I made it to the gym last night, finally took a class this morning, and I want to see if I can squeeze in a work out tonight. Going to the gym will decrease the amount of time I can reach in the freezer haha.
Plus I have a cocktail hour tomorrow night where I am sure I will see people from grad school and I already feel terrible that a whole year after our law school graduation I haven't dropped the weight I thought I would. had I stayed on track then I would be at goal now 😞 ... so I will try to be as close to it as I can.

@_Lilac_ OMG! what a night. So glad you have pups to protect or at least notify you of stuff. Great outlook on getting steps in while pacing.
You take care of yourself!! I know sometimes when I walk my dog I take pepper spray- just in case (depending where i walk and time) of other dogs or "questionable people". Would not be able to out run anyone..
Keep up the great work!
I'm heading out camping for 3 days this weekend -- so hoping not to o/d on camp goodies and snacks. But will be getting plenty of fresh air, hiking and kayaking -- can't wait.

@Gayle1018 In Canada we can't legally carry pepper spray since it is considered a weapon that can harm another person and designed for that purpose (even in self-defense). You can get it to ward off bears I think if you are camping or in the woods, but you can be charged if you use it against a person. I have to rely on my dogs to keep nasties at bay if I'm out walking them. I couldn't outrun anyone either!
Mom and I went walking in the natural park and I've had my nap so I feel so much better. My nephew is 15 and has taken to gardening. I might have been able to convince him to come clear some weeds and put down the mulch and dig up a place for me to plant some squash. I'm useless at that stuff.
Alright, off to close up the house against the heat. I don't have my window AC installed yet. Got to keep the hot air out.
Keep working hard everyone!

@_Lilac_ That is so scary!! Definitely start locking your doors. I've lived alone most of my life and had a few scary things happen, but never seeing someone looking in my front door. Yikes! I'm glad that you called the police.

Good Morning Everyone!!!
So I woke up feeling excited because I went to the gym twice yesterday and I thought I was noticing a difference in my body. I got dressed and headed for a class at the small boutique gym by my apt. and was happy to know that I was getting back into gear. Of course... I was running a little late so instead of walk I decide to run to the gym and low and behold I feel the shooting pain from my lower back shoot through my thigh and I know its my sciatica... 😞 . My morning work out was not so hot. But still i wasn't unmotivated. I resolved to go to the doctor and figure out how to fix this.
It wasn't until I logged my new weight and my food on the fit bit app that I decided to explore the app features only to find that last week my expected GOAL date was October 29th and now it is Nov. 9th ...
😞 ..... UGH!!!
I know its not that far away but it is an EXTRA TEN DAYS!! and it just feels like I am chasing something that I won't reach like a dog chasing its tail or a horse chasing the carrot stick that is dangled from his own head. My progress has been SUPER SLOW.... I have lost 7 pounds in the last 6 weeks and I thought I would at least fit into some of my dresses by now. Any advice is much appreciated.. I don't want to fall off the wagon like I did before.

Well, this morning I finally achieved normal weight based on BMI so very happy about that. The only thing is Fitbit still shows me at BMI of 25 which is still considered "overweight". However, I think it is the way Fitbit rounds the results of the BMI calculation as I've checked some other web sites and this other app I have says my BMI is just under 25 so I'm going to consider me normal weight!
I doubt I will make my goal I made back at Memorial Day or just afterwards. I still have about 9 pounds to go to make it and only two weeks left. I normally lose about 2-4 pounds a week, usually 3 or less. If I can just get under 180 on the 4th, I would be happy.

Interesting interaction at Walmart:
While in line, waiting to pay, I saw an old friend of my husband's ahead of me. I said hi and we hugged and she exclaimed how great I'm looking. I told her my weight loss total and she mentioned that she'd insisted they not buy junk while in the store. There is a wedding coming up and she has to stand next to a fitness clothing model (omg). The cashier said to my friend, "If you want to make it work then eat your carbs earlier in the day. Then you burn them off all day. I'm training for a weightlifting show and I used to be 200 lbs. But eat your carbs in the morning." Then Mom piped up and said, "Or you are better off without them!" and then I said, "Eating carbs in the mornings just makes me hungry all day long." and ....well, you see where this is going. I felt offended for my friend, who had NOT asked for advice. I would never just butt in and explain to people what I'm doing specifically because everyone is different. If she came to me privately and asked what was working for me, I'd tell her, but I'd point out that she has to figure out what will work. It's NOT a cookie cutter sort of thing.
Some people do no/low carb, some go vegetarian, some do a diabetic diet, some .....etc.
A weight lifter/body builder is going to eat differently than someone who is solely wanting to lose body fat. Anyway, it was very awkward and unsettling.
The park walk was good, about 5200 steps. Shopping afterward has now put me at 7600 total and it's not noon yet. I have some housecleaning to do and dog walking when it cools down later so I'll make goal.
I hope everyone is doing great. Do what works for you. Drink your water!

*Grumble grumble* I have the symptoms of plantar fasciitis. Same stupid leg as the knee, the sciatic nerve, etc. I can't catch a break. I know people here are working through this. I don't want it to get worse. Any suggestions to improve it before it develops further? The pool will re-open Monday so I am looking forward to getting in there for a sustained workout.
This is really frustrating me. Seriously. Walking a lot and doing workouts at 355 lb was difficult but necessary for weight loss (for me anyway). But it's when I got down 50 lb that I started having these problems. My activity has decreased some to compensate for the pain but my weight loss has also slowed. Now at 291 lb...still so big and needing to exercise, I keep facing these physical problems. I'm going to keep having them until I get this weight down but I need to move to do it. *bangs head on wall*
And I know someone will want to say, "It's 80% about the food" but until you see my food log and what's in my fridge...let's just leave it at that.
I really don't want to stop going for walks. I know some people here have had to go on 'rest' to treat it. What are the stretches that can be done?

@_Lilac_ Warning: This is long and all about Plantar Fascia, fixing it now and prevention.
I hated when I had PF, but mine was torn along with a tear in my achilles tendon. Major athlete that I am, I got it from bending down too much. I was wearing old hiking shoes and taking photos of flowers for a few hours. Felt some pain and, being too tough for my own good, pushed past the pain to take more photos. I don't recommend it. I was in PT for ages, had to see a rehab doc, and see a podiatrist who works with ballet dancers. I couldn't walk on it for a long time and walked minimally with a limp for awhile - all told it took over a year. (my year of gaining weight part 1). I'm not a doc, but I learned a lot which I'm happy to share with you. I now know way more about feet than I ever wanted to know.
First - do not tear it. The tear feels like a burn, instead of an ache. I hope that makes sense. If you think it is torn, I'd recommend a rehab doc because they will get you some appropriate gear for it. Athletes tear their tendons and can be sidelined a year. Tendons do not heal easily, as they are delicate and there isn't the same blood flow that a muscle gets.
It is totally logical for it all to be the same leg. When one tiny part of a leg is out of kilter or aching, we adapt our walk to protect it and that puts different pressure on every other part. That is also true if our muscles aren't strong enough or flexible enough. Athletes get tendon problems because they tend to over strengthen the muscles they use in the sport, and ignore the rest. It happens easily if our shoes aren't just right for our feet. Or if we don't stretch enough or the right way.
Assuming you have an ache, not a burn, you can ice it when it hurts badly. That will lower inflammation. In PT I was also told to put some warmth on it at other times to increase blood flow there, but I think exercising it works.
Rules:1. Do not put any weight on it when it is cold - if you have been sitting or sleeping, warm it up.
2. Do not walk barefoot. It needs support and protection.
Basically, I had to work my whole leg. Starting with the foot:
Before you get out of bed, you want to warm it up and stretch it. It has been in one position all night, so it needs some help before you put your weight on it and really use it. Depending on how bad it is, just wiggling your foot around, wiggling your toes, all very gently, should get it warmed up. Put your foot down gently so you know for sure you did enough.
The exercises: (do both feet/legs) Do NOT do anything that causes more pain. Do everything gently, on a warmed up foot. If anything hurts more, cut back. You have to keep learning just what your tendons are ready for each time, every day as they get stronger and more flexible. Do not push them, protect them.
1.Put a towel on the floor in front of you when you are sitting. With bare feet, scrunch the towel. Over and over, but dont over do it. More advanced: pick up marbles with your toes and put them in a bowl.
2. With your foot dangling, write the alphabet. Yes, with your foot and penmanship counts!
3. Lean your foot against a wall. Be very gentle with this. Shoes on. Put your heel on the floor, toes on the wall. Get a good angle so you can gently push and stretch the tendon. If you have something with a slant to it, that might be gentler than the wall.
When you sit awhile knitting or writing, wiggle your feet. Before you walk the dogs, warm up your feet.
You also need to do your entire leg - calves, hamstrings, quads and hips. You may not have been stretching enough for the amount of walking you have been doing. I'll get those exercises for you if you want. Each PT session I had was 3 1/2 hours! Exhausting.
Shoes - our needs change as we get more and more active. You went from zero to 100 in a relatively short time and you may need to try different shoes, different inserts. I ended up with about 10 inserts, all very well made, for PF and Achilles. Some worked better when I was first healing and needed more support, some work better now. It's an expensive experiment. The best seem to be (according to podiatrist, rehab doc and PT): superfeet, which come in different levels, Vionics, obeo. There are probably dozens more. If you get terrific inserts, put them in everything. I have mine in hiking shoes, work shoes and sneakers. I even wear flip-flops with an arch.
Lilac, you are one of the toughest women I know. You have toughed out a lot of things and pushed past all kinds of pain. With this, you need to think gentle, protective. Learn from my mistakes, please.
I'll check with my PT folder and see if there is more for the foot.

@Bobbinyc Thank you so much for your reply. I am going to work on this and make sure it doesn't get worse. I've been feeling the ache in my heel for about 4-5 days but no burning. I was just complaining to my sister about the fact I have to exercise to lose weight but when I do I get these over-use injuries and that being really overweight is so difficult to keep up the exercise part of things. She concurred, saying that her fibromyalgia is like that. She has muscle and joint soreness and the best thing is to stay active, but when she gets active, she pulls the muscles or gets injuries and it makes things worse. But you just have to keep going.
Hurdles and tests. On we go.

@Lilac93 In terms of sciatica and needing to move to lose... I TOTALLY GET IT!.... I eat 2 eggs in the morning, fruti as a snack, a turkey sandwich with no fancy stuff for lunch, maybe a fruit or cheese stick in the afternoon if I am super hungry, then protein and veggies at dinner. I work out 5 x a week, and I am not seeing change. and I think its bc my workouts are not as strong as they could be.. bc of the pain I feel, and if someone tells me I am eating wrong i might explode. I wish i could run faster or for longer but the pain makes my hip or lower back swell and then its worse.. so I try spinning and its the same issue, weightlifting also hurts bc guess what you need your back for like everything, and swimming might be good but its an anaerobic exercise so not exactly what I am looking for. I suggest getting to the doctor, try taking anti inflammatory meds to help with the swelling that way you can still move (ibuprofen works), and try adding anti inflammatory spices to your diet. i think Cinnamon, Coriander, and Tumeric are anti inflammatory and they will add flavor to your food. Also keep in mind that as you drop the weight the pain will get better because there will be less pressure on your bones, joints, etc. I know that when I was in the 170's after I worked through the pain that my back started to feel better. i am at 191 now and I know my hips could do without the extra 20 pounds sitting on them.
I am trying to get an appt. with a doctor to get an MRI and see if a Cortisone shot will work for my back, I know they are a temporary fix but if I get 3 months of no pain then that gives me 3 months of hard workouts and more weight-loss to ease the pressure aka less pain when the cortisone wears off. Maybe you can try that too?
Good Luck, and keep working hard

I love when we share our experiences and tips. Of course what works for one person won't for another, just as what works for me now,may not work later, but it gives us a starting point and more ideas. For me it is all a learning curve. By the time I figure out what works, my body changes or something goes wrong and I have to figure it out again. But I'm getting smarter and smarter about it with all the great ideas here.
I also find that, no matter how wonderfully I eat or how little, low carb, vegetarian...whatever...I absolutely will not lose an ounce if I am not very active and drinking a ton of water. Sometimes I can't lose any way.....

My goal that I set back in 2015 when I first started my weight loss journey is finally complete. I made it!! I weighed 183.4 this morning and it's the lowest since I was back in high school and I'm 61. I still have another 8 pounds to go for this challenge which I doubt that I will make unless I can lose 5 pounds per week and that's really pushing it. I wanted to make 175 by the 4th but even if I only get to 180 or 179, that will still be an accomplishment!
