Morning Workouts

Does anyone work out before work?

If so what motivates you to get out of the bed and do it?

 

I work a 8-5 Mon-Fri weekends off desk job. I find it really hard to get out of the bed and just do it. I'm typically in bed no later than 9:30 and I still have a hard time waking up in the morning to workout Man Frustrated

 

Any useful tips? Or Suggestions?

@LuV2Train I'm complaining about getting up at 4:45 and check you out at 3:45 (my shero) I think I will start preparing my gym clothes the night before, it's just the rolling out of bed that kills me!

I get up at 5:00 every morning as is it, and my boyfriend works late quite often, so I'm not willing to get up even earlier.  Fortunately I get arrive at work about half an hour before everyone else, so I can go leave half an hour earlier too, then just head to the gym.  Gets me there half an hour before most people too, so I'm finishing up when they get there.

I have the same schedule - 

what is your diet like? - a good diet will give you energy

what is your sleep patterns like?

how long does it take to get home from work? 

i leave at 5 im home by 6/630 - go to the gym till 8pm with a workout routine and cardio 

what motivtes me is wanting to be a better healthier me.

Right now my diet is struggling.  I know what I should eat but I don't always.

 

I go to bed at about 8:00, unwind for an hour, then go to sleep around 9:00 if I can.  Wake up at 5:00 in the morning.

 

Getting home or to the gym (a couple miles from my house) takes 30-45 minutes, so there's no point in going home first.  I change at work, go to the gym twice a week (and once on the weekends, except lately it has been too crowded) and then get home by about 6:00.

diet will definetly help - but also you dont necessarily want to over sleep which seems like maybe thats whats happening?

thats a really good motivation clip for waking up in the morning. 

try to get roughly 8 hours of sleep and no matter what get up 

a morning workout in my opinion doesnt mean you must go to the gym - any 30 day challenege, a 30 min run around the block - the 21 day fitness videos from beach body or the T 25 minutes (home workouts might be a good suggestion for you)

@SynCity It sets my morning in a positive direction. I'm energized throughout the day too and just feel good period.  This morning the weather was bad so I decided to not go...I feel more tired sleeping in that extra 1 1/2 hrs and not going then if I would've just made myself go.  I've been consistant at going this early the last couple of months and I honestlly don't put too much thought into it when my alarm goes off...if I think to myself.."OMGosh it's 3:45am..What am I thinking?"  more than likely I wouldn't go lol

@SynCity - Same boat, I have to get my gym time in before work since life takes over after 8AM.  Like others mentioned, I get everything ready the night before and literally drive to the gym in my PJs and dress there.  The more time I spend getting ready at home the more likely I am to crawl back in bed.  Or my wife tries to convince me to stay.

 

I always try to tell myself that I never regret getting up early, but I always regret when I skip my workout.  Works about 50% of the time. 

 

Or maybe we need an alarm clock that ridicules us to get outta bed!  "GET UP AND WORK OUT YOU LAZY A$$!!"

I also work a desk job, Have 2 kids a husband and 2 dogs.. So my days are usually so busy and when i get home after a long day at work the last thing i wanna do is work out (unless its summer and still nice out) What i find works best is Sundays you make sure you have all your meals for the week done! That way during the week you dont have to worry about waking up and making a lunch (plus saves you money and helps you make better food choices) Also everyday before i even go to bed i make sure i have my gym clothes ready to go for me when i wake up! Which is usually around 4am! the latest 415am.. Some days you dont want to wake up.. But push yourself if its what you truly want than make it happen! No more exucses! And maybe checking in on Facebook, Snapchat, instagram or even fitbit whatever app. may have someone to keep track of you and help keep you motivated to get up and go! Also some may not use "Preworkouts" but if you do make that the first thing you take as soon as you get out of bed! Or have a hot cup of coffee.. something to get you up and moving around. Once your feet hit that floor its alot easier to get going. Set your alarm clock away from your bed, set an alarm every 10-15 mins something that will get so annoying that you will have to get up out of bed. Once you get into the routine its easy to stick to it and hard to not wake up and get it done! 🙂 good luck!

I prefer to workout in the morning (although over the past few months I have slacked off terribly) simply because if I do it in the morning I don't have the remainder of the day to talk myself out of it.  I am not sure it is motiviation, its more a matter of just making myself get up and doing it, I will say that once I do it I always feel better.  If you can't get a full workout in because you can't get up in time, try starting with even just a few minutes.  When I was exercising regularly in the morning I eventually began to look forward to it because it gave me the energy to get through my day.  Good luck!!

Melissa, I also loved my morning runs, but now that I no longer run, I still love my morning workout.  When I ran at 5:00 I always said the hardest thing to do was to put my shoes on, once I was out on the road it became almost automatic, I knew my route and was in kind of a zone and it gave me energy for the rest of the day.  On the occasional day that it was pouring rain and I didn't run I felt bad all day.  The best days were just after a 1-2 inch snow fall, before any cars were out, the trees looked beautiful, the air was clean, and the run was almost effortless.  I soooo miss running!

I have a desk job, so going before work makes me feel better.  Yes there are days where I'm like I so don't want to do this, but my alarm is going to go off for work anyway I might as well get up and go to the gym a bit earlier.  When I was looking for a gym I looked in the area surrounding my job, so luckily there was one right down the street, literaly 5 mins away, no excuses.  After work I can always find an excuse not to go, it was I'm too tired, I "forgot" something..., it's going to be too crowded.  Plus now I get to spend time at home w/my daughter after work.  On the plus side I get to take a shower w/out having to have the baby monitor in the bathroom w/me, lol.

Plantar fasciitis that I did everyting to alleviate, shoe lift, stretching my big toe, stretching my heel cord, the best and longest lasting solution was Spenco orthotics, but when the pronation problem started going up to my knee( hyperpronation causes the tibia to externally rotate relative to the patella causing the patella to move laterally out of it's groove between the femoral condyles- also called runner knee)  Being  Physical Therapist I want to avoid a total knee for as long as possible.  So I still exercise but use equipment that is more knee friendly, ellipital cross trainer, stationary bike and Concept 2 rower.  I still get a good workout without further damage to soon to be 69 year old knees.

My is a Precor EFX 5.21i, it doesn't have movable arms it records time, distance, steps steps/min, calories and heart rate using a Polar chest belt.  I bought mine about 10 years ago and have no problem with it. The Feb 2016 rated various Ellipitcals.  I bought mine at store at sold exercise equipment.  If I were you I would go to a gym and try them out before buying one to make sure you like it, because it's quire an investment. Also my Precor does not have movable arms, because I like the stability of a solid frame.  Newer ones have built in heart rate monitors.

If you're a "morning person" it's relatively easy but if not, you need to make sure you get to bed early enough so you get a good night's rest for that early start the next day. Once you get into a pattern and get used to it, it also gets easier. And try not to miss a Monday as it's usually the hardest day to get out of bed.

I walk on the treadmill, my goal is to be able to run someday I find it so liberating but I also find it hard on my knees.

Melissa, I did most of my running on either concrete or blacktop roads and bike paths.  I found running on trread mills just as bad on my knees.  I switched to ellipitals because they don't have the same pounding effect on my knees as running did.  The only problem, although you get a good aerobic work out, there is very little carry over value to advance your running.

I give myself at least 30 minutes in the morning before getting ready for work to do a workout. I have found workout DVDs are the best for me. Following the instructional dvds makes it easier for me to simply follow along, get a great workout and get it all in before I start my day. I do this 6-7 days a week. I work 4 days a week. So there are days that I have time to relax before jumping into a workout. I also sneak in a few workouts a week on my lunch break, we have a gym at work and it's free. The workout dvds that I have range from Kettlebells, kickboxing, HIIT, cardio, weights, and yoga/pilates...keeping a variety of dvds at home also keeps me from getting bored...one of my favorites things to buy for the last 2 years = workout dvds! I swear by them! I know it is not for everyone, but when I wake up at 0330 and work a 10 hour day I want to be able to get the workout in and know throughout the day that I took time for myself before giving my time to anyone else (besides my dogs and making my boyfriend a smoothie). There are a ton of workout dvds to choose from..some are 25 mins and some are over an hour...but I find that at least 25-30 minute dvds are best on the days I have to go to work. Final words....Get it done in the morning!!
