Questions before buying...

Hi,

I am thinking of getting myself a fitbit for Christmas. I was wondering how high are you able to set the starting weight? Also I just got a treadmill and will be walking on it through the winter, will my steps still be counted even though my arms won't be swinging? Please any info will be helpful!

@ivnslady- I don't believe there is a maximum weight.  I just logged (and then unlogged) 1000 pounds without it giving me an error.   Depending what type of fitbit you purchase we can give you tips on getting your steps counted on a treadmill.  I have a Charge 2 (and an older Charge HR) and I wear it in my bra when I'm on the treadmill (I also have to wear it this way when I'm on the plant floor at work).  It picks up my steps and my heart rate at the same time.

Good luck with your new lifestyle changes.  There are plenty of people around here to answer your questions.  My own top weight was over 400 pounds at a point in my life so I have some experiences (good and bad) with losing weight when you have a lot to lose.  I'm around 265-270 at the moment so I'll be working on my own weight loss for a while.

Normally, steps won't be counted on a treadmill if you are holding the rails. You can get a clipon like the Zip or the One, or you can put the wrist device in a pocket if you hold the rails.

I agree with @GershonSurge. If you hold the rails with the Fitbit on your wrist, it's not going to count. If I'm on the treadmill, I very deliberately don't hold on. Which is fine as long as I don't close my eyes - then I usually lose my balance. 🙂

A stationary bike doesn't count steps either,  but the elliptical counts steps really well,, if you are thinking about what machine to buy.
