Some questions regarding calories and FitBit.

Hello everyone,

 

I've been using my Fitbit ChargeHR now for a few days and I just don't understand how I can have this many calories left to eat today. 

 

My current settings are for a -500 deficet in my diet to lose 1 pound a week. I'm allowed to have 2,184 calories per day. Today I went on a 4 mile hike and then walked a mile later on. Apparently doing these activities has given me a total of 3,542 calories to eat today. That just seems ridiculous to me. Am I over thinking it? Is the calorie burned portion not trust worthy? Or am I seriously allowed to eat this much more food?

 

Bonus question: I was told that to find my BMR I want to take the calories burned in a 5 minute period of down time. Which for me, is around 7.1 then do the formula 7.1/5*1440 to get 2,044.8. So would it be more accurate for me to take 2,044.8, subtract 500 from it to get 1,544.8 and use that number for my daily caloric goal? It seems much lower than the allowance fitbit was giving me per day (2,184 counting the -500).

 

Thank you for the help. I tend to get really discouraged from working out and staying healthy when I can't find the right answers to these types of questions. It seems every has a different outlook on everything.

Have you ever logged what you used to eat that made you need to lose weight now?

 

Until you have done that, you likely have no concept of calories, and what it takes for you to gain, and to lose.

Just because the only eating goals you've seen are likely at 1200, doesn't mean the bare minimum for a sedentary average woman is best for you.

If giving your body bare minimum is the way to go, don't expect to transform your body with any exercise.

 

If you plan on going in to a coma and sleeping all day, and wanting to lose weight, then yes you would take 500 calories off your BMR.

 

Sadly you'll be losing a huge part of weight as muscle mass. Unless you have them hook electrodes up to stimulate your muscles while sleeping.

 

But that's an awful lot of work.

 

And yes, if your BMR is around 2000, then that likely means you are hauling around a bit of mass, which adds up easily to the day, and for weight bearing exercise.

 

Your body will get stressed out with you feeding it too little. Sounds like you think feeding it about half what it wants would be useful.

If that is really the thinking, then just stop eating and get it over with quicker, if bigger is better.

 

Or use the tool correctly for best results.

The fitbit numbers seem OK.  Personally I started at mostly 2000 kCal/day of 2800kCal needed and am going for now to 2300 kCal/day because I was losing weight too fast. I also got 3500kCal needed when I walked more,  no idea if it is correct but I guess fitbit has a good view on average impact.

My BMR is depending on the online calculators something around 1800 to 2000.
