Just a hair over a year ago, I got my FitBit One and very shortly thereafter, two of my friends got theirs. One of the first things we did together was Walk MS. My friend Louise (the one in the middle of the pic) has MS and we thought it would be a great way to get our steps in, support our friend, and raise money for a good cause... And here we are .... (story continues....)
Fast forward...
One year and many, many steps later....
Louise has lost 90+ pounds, Barbara (on the left) has lost 60+ and I (on the right) have lost 55. Here we were today at this year's Walk MS....
THANK YOU FITBIT for keeping us motivated, giving us the tools for this accomplishment, and keeping us moving!!! We all still have a little bit to go to our goals, but we know we can make it and we know we'll stay there once we get there thanks to our FitBits.....
Melanie

That is really inspiring! Well done all of you...I was really needing some motivation today. I keep re-starting the fitbit only to binge for days and put it all back on...I just need to stick to it and keep going. Your weight loss in a year is truly amazing. I'm going to follow your example and make tomorrow the first day of things to come xx

You all look great. Did all the weight come off just from walking or did you also include other sorts of workouts? How many steps did you walk on average?

Thanks for all the nice feedback! I was hoping our story would help inspire people to see what they can do if they set their minds to it. And by the way Kristi-schw - if printing pictures helps keep you motivated, go for it! I've got our pictures hanging on my desk at work.
To answer your question Charlibets: We all exercise over and above our steps. AND we all average over 10k steps per day.
Louise (the one in the middle and the one with MS), averages 23k steps per day. She rides her bike almost daily - and a short ride for her is 10 miles.
Barbara walks like a fiend - her average right now is 14k and goes WAY up in the summer time when she's not working. She does the occasional trip to the gym (and is planning to increase the frequency of her gym trips since she's on a plateau at the moment)
My average is also 14k per day and I do an amazing workout called "The Bar Method". (www.thebarmethod.com - checkout the new online option if there isn't a studio near you - I highly recommend it!). I also mix it up with a rebounder, Zumba, Wii Fit. I have a short attention span.
The key is using everything available to you: Make the most of your FitBit tools - I recommend signing up for the Premium features, if you haven't already, so that you can use the Trainer - and then actually USE the trainer - let it push you to burn more calories every week.
I started logging my food about a month after getting my FitBit. I expected that to last no more than a week but have found it to be soooooo valuable that I've kept it up for a year. Being able to see your calories in vs. calories burned is a very powerful tool for helping make "grown up" decisions. We all say that our FitBit helps us make the choices we always knew we should be making.
I had knee surgery last July and was pretty much off my feet for over a month, but still managed to maintain my weight during that time thanks to the FitBit tools that helped me monitor my calories.
I wear a heart rate monitor when I'm doing any exercise other than walking so I can log accurate calories burned. I tend to overestimate calories eaten and underestimate calories burned in order to keep from cheating myself.
Oh, and I have the Aria scale which I find also keeps me honest because I can't "conveniently" transpose numbers when logging my weight.
Logging your measurements along with your weight has also been helpful as there are times when the scale isn't moving but the waistline is... It helps to keep me upbeat as this is a long term process.
And MOST IMPORTANT: Having a group of friends who are supportive and are working through this with me has made all of the difference in the world!!! (And a little healthy competition doesn't hurt!)
I've had several friends buy FitBits and then wonder why they're not losing weight. It's not a magic pill. It doesn't do the work - you do. It's just a tool, but it's a very powerful tool if you're willing to make the effort to use it.

None of us is doing a "diet" so much as eating healthier than we did before.
Barbara is doing Weight Watchers, Louise just works her buns off and eats sensibly. I like to cook so I tend to cook healthier stuff.
As my weight has come down, especially in the last 10 pounds or so, I've found it MUCH harder to keep the weight coming off because I'm smaller and burning fewer calories. That has caused me to make adjustments to what I eat. I eat very little processed/packaged food. Cutting out the trail mixes and nuts that were a staple for morning snacks for me (I'm always hungriest early in the day). Substituting with fresh fruits and veggies (which thank goodness I actually like). I make my own greek yogurt (because that's just the kind of thing I'd do) and mix with packets to make veggie dip. Thank goodness, summer fruits are starting to show up!
For the most part, "healthy" and "in moderation" are your key words. I personally think it's critical to track your food so that you can see your calorie intake vs. your output. In theory, it doesn't matter what you eat as long as you're burning more than you're taking in (however in reality, that's not really true as you'll feel better if you're eating real foods, not the processed junk).

Such an amazing journey and excellent job! What did you like the most about the fitbit premium? I track my food through a WW style app and have noticed that seeing how few steps I take each day is a HUGE wake up call. I exercise via water aerobics but would love to see that 10k hit everyday.

Sparkly_Blonde - the Premium features are great, but by far the best (and most hated - ha ha) feature was the Trainer. It pushes you to increase your calorie burn each week. It's not a huge increase, just enough to be a challenge. For me, it was just what I needed to get me going.
When I first started with my Fitbit, I was barely getting 3000 steps a day and wondering how on EARTH people hwo work full time get 10,000 or more steps. But you start finding ways to fit them in. I get to work early and take a walk around the block early in the AM - I find that does WONDERS for my productivity during the day. I try to fit one or two more walks in during the work day if I can - at lunch and maybe in the late afternoon if my schedule allows. I walk at home at night with a friend. I park farther away from things, take multiple trips to unload things from the car.... I've become remarkably inefficient so I can get more steps in 🙂 All of those things add up.
Make sure you're logging your water aerobics on Fitbit - that calorie burn will make a difference too and keep focused on the big picture - not just the steps.
Most of all - make sure you're having fun!
