Device only 'on' when connected to power

Same problem that I've read many others have had - 100% charged and connected to my iPhone but once I take the fitbit off the charger and you click the button - nothing. Not counting steps, no lights, nothing. I have had people help me try to restart the device as well and it didn't work. 

 

Extremely disapointed.. my daughter brought this for me as a happy retirement gift. Brand new and broken straight out of the box??

This tracker was retired a couple of years ago. Where was it purchased? Can you return it? It likely sat on a shelf discharged for a long time which will ruin a lithium ion battery.
