Fitbit One recording steps while I'm not even wearing it!

There have been a few days lately when my Fitbit One has recorded steps when I was sleeping and not even wearing the device. I attempted to negate the steps and distance on my dashboard by entering a "driving" activity for the period as outlined in the Community boards. While the steps and distance were negated, it added several hundred calories to my total burned for the day. Example - for today, Feb. 27, I negated the steps between 12:00 am - 5:15 am by entering driving for that time. Before the activity, I had 7798 steps, 3.52 miles and 1962 calories burned; after the entry I have 6048 steps, 2.73 miles and 2301 calories. Steps and distance negated but calories increased! How is this possible? Secondly (actually more importantly, why are steps being recorded while I am not even wearing the Fitbit)? Entries were completed via desktop using Windows 10 and/or Apple iPad using IOS 9.2.1. This is happening on both mine and my wife's account.

With this issue plus the negative calorie adjustment not working with the IOS platform, we are becoming g very discouraged with Fitbit after being excited to make it a part of our fitness program. Would appreciate some help. (I have also emailed Fitbit support)

Hello @bsjtweth,

Welcome to the community!

Do you put it on a nightstand that has anything that may impart movement?  As oscillating fan?  Next to a heater or air conditioning vent?  If so, that's likely what's causing the steps.  There have been accounts of this occuring.

I hope this helps.

We did have it on a nightstand next to a fan, a place we have never put it before as we are currently away from home and our "usual" overnight spot - interesting that is what may have caused it to record steps. We will make sure to move it. Thanks for this info. Any idea on why the driving workaround adds calories when trying to negate those unearned steps?

HI @bsjtweth. Driving adds calories because you burn more while driving than if you were sedentary. But it's negligible; whatever calories burned were reported, you have to keep in mind that it includes your BMR (i.e., the calories you burn for sustaining life -- heart and lung functions, etc.) So the increment you received for logging driving as an activity won't count for much relative to your total daily burn. Hope this helps. Have a nice day.
