Managing tracking gaps

I've read on other threads that when walking / running on a treadmill that if your arms aren't moving (such as when you hold onto the handles) the tracker won't count your steps, which is understandable.

My gym has an app which connects to the machines (you log into the machines, they log your workouts, and can be viewed on the app), and I can connect that app to the Fitbit one. Great so far as any missed exercises can be transferred over this way.

My question is around double logging; if some of my steps on a treadmill are logged by my Fitbit (I.e when I'm not holding the handles), but not enough to count as an exercise period, an I double logging some steps by linking the other app's data?

Some threads here say no, some say yes.

Fitbit can you advise?
