If you go to your personal information on the app or online, you can change the distance that each step counts. An easy way to figure this out is to run 1km then see how many step you took, divide it out and see how many meters each of your stride is. You can customize it for running and for walking.

@CorryLester's post is spot on. The following help document explains all this in detail. When you make your changes in Settings, please make sure to save your changes and force a sync, otherwise the said changes will not take effect. Here is the link: Stride Length.
The following link takes you right to your Settings - scroll down a bit to the Body Info heading and make your changes there for both walking and running stride lengths.
