Always display steps first when looking at Charge 3 display

Is there any way to make it such that when I lift my arm to look at my Charge 3, step count is the default stat displayed? If I want other stats, I will swipe/tap. This is how it was on the Charge 2. My step count is the thing I am always most interested in. Currently when I first look, I might see calories, or floors, etc. I like being able to see this other stuff, but I want the first piece of information to be steps.

Any solution to this?

There are a few clock faces that do not have a "tap" function to look at other stats.  Stats Heavy, Mod Clock Date, and Steps Date are the ones that comes to mind.  There is no accidental tapping that will show other stats with these clock faces.

You can test out any of the faces.  Pick which one you like and test it to see if it will switch the stats if you tap the screen.  If it doesn't swap out the stats, then that is one you're looking for.

My suggestion would be to choose a clock face that has a display of steps or a face that a user can tap to change the stat on the face. Once the stereo start is displayed it should stay showing steps until the user taps the screen while the click is showing.

Retro double, Anolog Stats, and Charge 2 retro perform this way. I like analog stats and find once set to steps it stays on steps.

Thank you, Rich.

However, I have a clock face that has steps, but it does not always come up on that stat. I suspect that it gets "tapped" just in normal wear. If I am doing something active, I just want to be able to glance and see step count. I don't want to have to tap through several screens (and often accidentally tap past) to get steps. This even more inconvenient if I am doing something with my hands: tennis, kayaking, even just holding a water bottle while jogging is more difficult.

I just want to quickly see steps like I could on the Charge 2.

I just got a Charge 3 this weekend and I’m having the same issue.  It’s like the thing is going out of its way not to show my steps on the tracker.  I have tried the Retro Double clock face and Charge 2 Retro.  It’s really annoying.

Hello @NameWithheld with the Charge 3 their are several watch faces that do show today's steps.

With any watch face a simple up swipe will display your main daily goal at the top. If the top icon is not steps, please check your main daily goal.

No, that's not it, but thanks.  I just want the default screen to show steps.  I don't want to stop and scroll or swipe.  I've tried several clock faces and it may start with steps, but then it defaults to any of the other stats (calories, flights, etc.) and never seems to go back to just showing steps.  I want a clock face that shows time, date, and steps at first glance.  And nothing else.

I've had several Fitbit models and this is the first one with this issue.

Agree with this - annoying that it just doesn't show steps first after going back to "sleep". Wish there was a way to change that and lock the step count (or whichever stat you like) and then swipe/tap to see the rest.

Both me and my partner also have this issue. We have chosen the clock that displays steps as that’s what we want to see as default before we tap for other stats and it did at first but now every time we lift our wrist up it’s on steps or heart rate as if it’s scrolling through the stats itself? Not sure why and agree with you that it’s very annoying and also this was never an issue with charge 2.

May I ask which clock face are you asking about? Some of the faces will change status when tapping with the display on.

No one is listening to the poster. The issue is NOT that he can’t see steps. It is NOT related to the clock face. The issue is when they look at the fitbit, the steps are not the first thing they see. They have to scroll to find the steps. On previous Fitbits, steps were always the default display and you would have to scroll to find the other stuff. We want to just look the fitbit and see steps without scrolling or tapping.

The original poster states that his Stats are never the same. There should be no way the stats can be re-aranged, that is why we assumed it was the clock.

It’s definitely nothing to do with the clock face as the original poster has also said. I am using Charge 2 Retro clock face, which shows steps on the image when choosing it? and I’ve got default goal as steps. When I lift my wrist it does occasionally show steps but not very often, mostly it’s stairs or hr or calories. As the original poster said this is frustrating when you have set all defaults to show steps first but it doesn’t so you have to stop and tap through the stats.

Original poster here. The clock always shows up. What I want to also always show up is the step count. That is the way it worked on my charge 2. Currently, sometimes it is clock and steps (and heart rate), sometimes it is clock distance and calories, sometimes it is clock stairs and minutes of exercise (I think). I like having all of these stats, but the one I want to see first without tapping to get to it is STEPS. It is why I bought the fitbit.

Respectfully, you are misunderstanding the issue. Bear with me:

The clock face she is using is retro double stat. She is a jogger, as are many of your customers, which means steps and heart rate are the most important stats for her and need to be seen at-a-glance. Retro double stat is the only clock face that shows heart rate, steps, time, and date on the first face at a glance. It also does this in a non-busy and aesthetically pleasing way. It is, in my opinion, and I believe most other’s, the best clock face. It also cycles through all the stats with a tap, which is a great issue, with one major flaw which I will detail below.

Yes, there are clock faces that do not cycle through other stats when you tap the clock face and will always show your steps no matter what. But telling the customer to simply use one of these is not solving the issue, it is a less than ideal work around that asks the customer to sacrifice what they want to make the product work. All of these options have issues. Two examples:

Stats Heavy: Does not show date. Very busy face that shows more stats than are usually needed at a glance.

Mod Clock Date: Does not show heart rate, and is a bold aesthetic choice that may not be for everyone.

All the clock faces that cycle, like Retro Double Stat, will remember what you cycled to and when the screen turns off, and turns on again (when you lower, then raise the Fitbit), no matter how much time has passed since you last activated the screen, it will show the stat(s) that you last cycled to first. To show other stats, you have to tap to cycle through, or swipe up. There are two problems with this:

1. As exemplified in this thread, many customers, including me, are finding that normal wear will activate and cycle though the stats accidentally. So when they raise the Fitbit it shows them the last cycle setting (which was accidental) instead of the steps/heart rate that they were expecting. This is a surprise frustration and to get to what they want, they have to tap or swipe up. This is very frustrating when on kilometre 8 of a 10k training run.

2. The customer purposefully cycled through the stats by tapping because they wanted to see something else. However, they are forced to cycle back to steps/heart rate otherwise what they cycled to will be the first thing they see the next time they raise the Fitbit. Because customers have chosen to display steps/heart rate first, these are always the most important to them. An example: I never want to see stairs first — but I sometimes want to see stairs once. If I cycle to stairs by tapping, and don’t cycle back, I will see stairs the next time I look at my Fitbit when I want to see steps/heart rate.

The Fitbit Charge 2 operated like this:

When the screen was tapped to cycle to a different stat, then lowered to turn the screen off, the next time it was raised to turn the screen on, it would show your default first stats, not the stats cycled to when you last had the screen on.

The Fitbit Charge 3 operates like this:

When the screen is tapped to cycle to a different stat, then lowered to turn the screen off, the next time it is raised to turn the screen on, it shows the stat that was last cycled to, not the default stat(s) that are shown on the clock face selection screen. These default stats, in the case of Retro Double Stat, are steps and heart rate.

When the customer selects Retro Double Stat, she wants those stats to always be first to come up, like they used to in the Charge 2. Telling the customer to use a different clock face that doesn’t cycle would be an acceptable answer only if there was a clock face option that shows everything they want in Retro Double Stat at a glance (Time, steps, heart rate, date), without suffering from the cycle issue. There is not.

The solution is a software update that changes the clock face cycle function back to how it used to work on the Charge 2 (described above). The reason why you’re encountering a lot of customer frustration in this thread is because this has not been acknowledged to date.

Please fix this.  This is a very annoying feature.  Considering it worked fine with the Charge 2.  Please update the Charge 3 to function as it should.

In my experience, with my Charge 3, the "Steps Date" clock face is your best choice to ensure that the first display shown will always be three things; Time, Date and Steps. You can still scroll to access other data, but those three items remain the default. That is the best answer for the original poster.

I disagree that this has been answered.  Just because forum moderators are satisfied they have answered it doesn't mean that for us, YOUR CUSTOMERS(!), it had been!

I have the exact same issue and frustration.  I don't want to see ANY clock face -- i have a watch on my left wrist that I've been raising to see the time for 50 years!  I don't want to EVER see any time!  I want to raise my right wrist and see steps!  Total steps for the day.  I don't want to be reminded of how many steps i need to complete your arbitrary amount of 250 per hour!  And when I've  met YOUR goal for that hour, i can't swipe up to see my steps, i get "you've met your goal, nothing to see here!"  WHAT???!  I want to  see total steps!  For heaven's sake, be responsive and tell us how to consistently see only total steps do far for this day!  Why is this so hard to achieve, when that was the default for earlier models?

I have had my Fitbit Charge three since they hit the market. When I looked at it, it always displayed my steps only, unless I swiped it.  I received an e-mail prompting me to install a "recommended" update.  Since then, it now displays a clock face.  I can't figure out how to get it back to displaying just the steps, but it has for over a year now, so I know it's doable.

I use Retro Double Stat too. I love the face. NO others will do. It is the ONLY one on the preview that comes close to seeing what I always want to see FIRST

TIME

DATE

STEPS

HR

I always want to see these 4 FIRST at the same time.

I have the same issue.  I’d love to see a ‘home’ stat

the preview example in the app ‘When choosing’ shows exactly what I want to see ALWAYS FIRST.

Other faces for me are useless (since I don’t use this as a primary watch for cuteness or fanciness otherwise I would have got an Apple Watch but I love my Citizen Eco Pink so will not change my real ‘watch’)

I’m among those that want home or ‘sticky’ stats when pressing wake on side button
