Fitbit uses you stats (gender, age, weight, height) to estimate a Base Metabolic Rate (BMR). The BMR is the energy your body needs to stay alive. The count starts at midnight and ends at the next midnight. At this time there is no way to strip this from the total calorie estimate which includes workouts and exercises. You can check the accuracy of the estimate by checking out BMR calculators in the web.
